Move CA to new server, configuration updates necessary?

I'm in the process of adding a new WFE to the farm and decommissioning the old one. There are numerous things that will need to be recreated on the new server, including:

  • SMTP
  • cliconfg aliasing
  • web.config customizations
  • AAM settings
  • Kerberos setspns
  • User Profiles
  • Search
  • Custom code
  • ...?

Anything else routine I'm missing? The current WFE is running:

  • Central Administration
  • Microsoft SharePoint Foundation Incoming E-Mail
  • Microsoft SharePoint Foundation Web Application
  • Microsoft SharePoint Foundation Workflow Timer Service
  • Search Query and Site Settings Service
  • Secure Store Service
  • SharePoint Server Search

Any recommendations appreciated.

Much thanks,

Scott

Hi Scott,

In my opinion, if you want to add a new WFE to the farm and transfer all functions and CA running on the current old WFE to new WFE, in addition to what you have mentionedyou can join the new WFE to the farm then host the CA by running Config wizard on new WFE, then start all services (and set customizations) on new WFE as same as old WFE, then check if it worked when stop the old WFE, then remove the old WFE from the farm when all configurations are tranfered to new WFE.

Note, back up the server firstly, and fully test in a test environment before touching production.
