Mostly blank page in SQL Server Report Manager
I have scoured the internet for resolution to an issue I am having with the Report Manager page in SSRS.I read dozens of articles of similar issues, but none that exactly fit my circumstances. The Problem:For certain users, the report viewing page shows up with only the header and a few links, but no reports. The setup:I have SQL Server 2008 running on two separate machines sitting side by side, connected to the same network. Both are running Windows XP SP2.I have successfully deployed a set of reports from Visual Studio 2008 to both machines. When I launch the URL to view the reports, both work without issue on any machine in my building. I have sent the links for both machinesto an additional set of users in a different building. One of the machines works perfectly, and the other has the issue of a mostly blank page with no reports. The machine working properly is a laptop that I mostly use to develop the reports. The machine that is showinga blank page is a desktop that I had planned to use as the reporting sever.Obviously to ensure the server is up and running at all times, I do not want to be forced to use the laptop. What I've tried so far:I have compared every last setting I can find between the two machines and cannot find any difference. Both are configured using Local System as the service account and Local Systemto accessthe Report Server. Both are set to use port 8080 for URL's.Both are in Native Server Mode.Again, I am running XP SP2 on both machines, so all of the solutions provided for a Vista setup (UAC settings, running IE as administrator, etc.) are not applicable. Also note, I am running SQL Server 2008, so anonymous access settings in IIS are not relevant.Any suggestions of things I have not already tried would be GREATLY appreciated!

I'm not sure if I had the same problem you did, but mine was solved when I went in to the top-level folder that contained my reports, Properties tab, Security link. Have you compared the settings in there? I found that particular location to be rather obscure!

Those settings are also exactly the same as wellSomething I forgot to mention, the machine that does not work properly was upgraded from SQL Server 2005 to 2008.Some of my searches for a resolution mentioned issues when upgrading. I uninstalled everything and reinstalled a fresh copy of 2008. However, as I expected, some of my settings remained the same even after a reinstall, so I am not confident that this is not part of the issue.

Hi Graham,From your description, it seems the issue is caused by the security settingsas alicorn2 has mentioned. The users need Browser role(be default) at least to view reports. To solve the issue, please follow these steps:1.open the Report Manager with administrator privelege.2.In the Home page, click "Properties" tab.3.Click "Security" tab.4.Click "New Role Assignment".5.Type the certain users(or the group of these users) in the "Group or user name textbox".6.Check the "Browser" role.7.Click OK to apply. If the solution above does not help, please set the Internet Expolorer (IE) in the clients:1.Open IE2.Click the menu "Tools" -- > "Internet Options..."3.Go to "Security" tab.4.Select "Intranet sites" or "Trusted sites" zone.5.Click "Add" to add the report server sites to such zone.6.Click "Custom Level"7.And then check "Auto logon with currect user name and password" to authenticate automatically. If there is anything unclear, please feel free to ask. Thanks,Jin ChenJin Chen - MSFT

Jin, that worked perfectly for me as well. My problem was similar, as only I could access report manager, no other employee could, even our sysadmin. Setting an explicit Browser role assignment for my group seemed to do the trick. Thanks for your help.

Hi, We got the same problem after we had to replace a user to whom System Administrator's role was assigned on Report Manager. In "Site Settings" the new user was properly showing up, however the Home page was blank. We did a lot of fuss, before somebody checked Properties/Permissions of the “Home” folder in the SSRS – not in the Report Manager – and the new user was not added there. I’m not sure why it did not propagate it to the SSRS, but after we manually added a new user there, all the functionality of the Home page got restored. Somehow it never occurred to me before, that Home page in Report Manager and Home folder in SSRS have something in common… J I hope this still could help somebody. Tatyana
