Monitoring server CPU usage
With the built in functions in SCOM 2007 R2, how can I set up a monitor for high CPU usage? For example, say that it will trigger if CPU usage is over 90% for 2 minutes? Surely this must be done in some way?

Hi, The Windows Server Management Pack do that. Have a look here : http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=9296 There is a monitor checking for the CPU Utilization. Maybe you'll have to customize the threshold. Regards.Supervize Me

Hi, and thanks for quick answer. I have a lot of MP's installed, but cant find any info about where these monitors might be located. Do you know where this can be found?

The monitor name is "Total CPU utilization percentage" which come from windows OS Management Pack You may use override by setting 1) CPU utilization threshold: 90 2) Interval(Seconds):60 3) number of samples: 2 Best regard Roger

Hi, You'll find these monitors (one for 2003 and one for 2008) in Authoring -> Management PAck Objects -> Monitors. Make sure to display Windows Server 2003 Operating System and WIndows Server 2008 Operating System targets. If you don't see them you'll have to change the scope and select them. After tht you can apply what Roger said. Regards.Supervize Me

Thanks, I found the monitor where you said it was. This might be a dumb question but, how do I know that this monitor is active on my monitored servers? I dont think this is working because some servers have quite high CPU some times. How do I enable this monitor? It sais Yes in the Enabled by Default column. Maybe I can lower the thresholds and see if something happends?

Hi, Open a view displaying 2003 or 2008 operating system objects, select one and go to health explorer. You will see the actual monitor state under the Performance agregate monitor. I think this monitor autoresolves alert so maybe the monitor goes critical and triggers an alert then go back to healthy state and close the alert. So you should also look at the state change events tab to see the history of state changes. You can also create a custom view displaying alerts from this monitor only and don't filter on resolution state so that you'll see both new and closed alerts. Regards.Supervize Me

Try this. Real time CPU & MEMORY monitor alert on utilization higher than threshold when they exceed consecutive times. May be useful . refer here http://www.sms4mail.com/smsmail/cpu_alert.htm
