Monitoring for SYSLOG in SC2012 OpsMgr
We are running OpsMgr 2007 R2 CU3. We have implemented some monitoring processes using SYSLOG protocol. The devices are discovered as Network Devices, the rules are targeted to those Network Devices. My question when upgrading to SC2012 OpsMgr ( ... yes, before that we will upgrade to SCOM 2007 R2 CU6 ): Do I need to create a dedicated Resource Pool for these devices ? Is there any other way to receive SYSLOG messages in SC2012 OpsMgr ? I only need SNMP to discover the devices. Alle monitoring is done with SYSLOG. thanks for your time sebastian

Hi, You could refer to the following article: Setup and Test SysLog Alerting Through SCOM 2012 http://scom-2012.blogspot.com/2012/06/setup-and-test-syslog-alerting-through.htmlAlex Zhao TechNet Community Support

Hi Alex, thanks for link. Unfortunately the info I need is not in there. Again, perhaps also for others: In OpsMgr 2007 R2 I discover NetApp Filers and F5 Acopia devices as Network Devices. I then create some specialized Classes derived from Network Devices, one class for NetApp, one class for the F5 etc. Criterion is the OID returned during SNMP discovery. Finally we create rules targeted at the various classes, not forgetting to always have an "AND HostName Equals Target-Object-IpAddress", as IPAddress is the KeyProperty for Network Devices. So far for Monitoring via SYSLOG in OpsMgr 2007 R2. a) In the docs for OspMgr 2012 I learnt that I need a dedicated Resource Pool, means dedicated additional servers(!), for Network Monitoring. I donot have any idea how to discover the Network Devices but via real Network Discovery, which implies that I have to invest in the additional Resource Pool's servers. For our purpose this would be a quite expensive solution. b) Other possibility would be to use Kiwi-Syslog. But this means to create the device discovery on my own, which is uncomfortable when starting but costeffective once it is setup. Summary: Is my understanding rigth, that a) is the way it would run in OpsMgr 2012 ? Thanks for your help Sebastian

Hi Sebastian You don't technically need any more management servers for network monitoring in SCOM 2012 although that does to some extent depend on the number of network devices you are monitoring. You can create a network devices resource pool and add an existing management server into that resource pool. Then create the discovery rule targeted at that resource pool. Over time, you could add another management server to the resource pool. Perhaps get the network devices discovered first and then we can look at adding the syslog functionality: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh278846.aspx http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh212728.aspx Cheers GrahamRegards Graham New System Center 2012 Blog! - http://www.systemcentersolutions.co.uk View OpsMgr tips and tricks at http://systemcentersolutions.wordpress.com/
