Modified by updating when document opened read only
I have several users that when they open documents the modified date and username change even if they do not save the document. In fact those fields change even if the user selects to open the document read only. I have verified that it only happens on their machines, if they login to another system (different config) it works as expected. All affected users are on: Windows 7 64bit Office 2007 SP2 Server SharePoint 2007 updated to February 2011 CU All servers in the farm are 2008 except for the DB which is SQL 2005 on Server 2003 Any help would be greatly appreciated

Hi Murdock71, After a lot of search, I believe that this is an Office related problem, it seems has nothing to do with SharePoint. And I found a thread which is talking about this issue, you can refer to the thread, maybe you can find the answer from it: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/sk-SK/word/thread/376feddb-c5a8-4657-ae15-1aaa1940ef5c. Thank you for the response, I agree that this sounds more like a Office issue than a sharepoint issue. Although after testing I find in my case that it does not seem to occur with files stored in the local file system, only on files stored in sharepoint. As far as the thread you suggested there does not seem to be a solution listed, in addition I checked the document and there are no links or apparent date fields within it. I have never seen the issue on other Office 2007 or 2010 machines so it would appear to be a version/patch level issue. Thank You

Hi Murdock71, Does this issue also occurs on files stored in non-SharePoint sites? Thanks & Regards, Peng Lei

I guess I am not sure what you mean by non-sharepoint sites. No other web based systems I have access to have integration with Office the way sharepoint does.

Hi Murdock71, Sorry, I may misunderstood your meaning. As you said that this issue only happens on some of the users and provided the version of their Office, OS and SharePoint. So could you please provide some information of the normal user in order to determine the difference between them. Thanks & Regards, Peng Lei

Ok, I think I understand your question. I have a lot of different configs in my environment, mine for example is Win7 64bit Pro, Office 2010. I have never see or hear the issue reported when a user has office 2010 or a version of windows besides win 7. I am working to build a test machine that matches the users environment as closely as possible. Hopefully I can duplicate the issue there and can then play around with various patch levels.

Hi Murdock71, Sorry for the delay. According to your description, this is more like an Office version issue than a SharePoint issue. I suggest you to post this question on Office products Forum, maybe you can get the answer of this problem from there. Thanks & Regards, Peng Lei
