Mobile Device Discovery/Installation
Hi, Ive tried to find the info I need by searching , but cant find anything, so hoping soneone has an idea about this. I am trying to get a mobile device to be discovered and installed in a moxed modeSCCM R2 environment. The phone is a Windows Mobile 6 device which is supported and I have manually installed the client on the device which is attached to a laptop. The client appears to have installed as I now have an icon on the device which says "device management". However, the device "service" is stopped and doesnt seem to want to start and nothing appearsunder the mobiledevices collection. BUT I do get extra inventory about the device from the Vista laptop which has the inventory extensions. The device is only ever connected to the laptop and syncs with it - it never connects to the network in any other way. I have an issue understanding the concept of how the device connects to the network, and it would also be good to get clarification that a device can be installed in mixed mode - theresconfusion in my mind about that having read various docs. Does it needs a certificate in mixed mode- again I dont think so but would be great to get that confirmed. Thanks Kim

You do not need to be in native mode, unless you want to manage the system over the air - if so, then native mode is required. Not sure where it is, but I did a hands-on lab on implementing a mixed mode environment to support Windows Mobile devices, in an emulated environment. I know we ran it at multiple conferences, and I submitted it for a virtual hands-on lab, but don't see it on the TechNet Virtual Labs site. Your scenario is exactly what I do in my lab, Activesync is how the emulated device communicates with the site. You might need to look in the DM*.logs on the site server to see what it says.

Thanks for that Wally - I had already found the page (link) above, but cant find any references to activesync management.

I don't know that there is anything that has to be done, other than get the agent installed and have a successful DMP installed for communications. I'll boot up my image, run through my lab,and see if I see anything unique.

I just ran through my lab in my virtual environment, and yes, the logs in question that you'd need to look at are on the server. DMPSetup.log in the Configuration Manager\Logs folder on the site server. You need to validate this to ensure that the managment point has been configured as a device management point. Once that was done successfully, you then look to the MP for client data. Then a whole set of DMP*.log files in the SMS_CCM\Logs folder on the MP. For example, DmpDiscovery.log for a device client when it first connects in, and sends its "Heartbeat Discovery" data to the device management point. And, my device client (emulated) is only connected via ActiveSync. I disconnected the ActiveSync connection, and it was unable to send in a DDR. Reconnect ActiveSync, and the device communicates fine.

Wally thats fantastic. I hadnt looked in the sms_ccm folder, so thats maybe my missing link - and working via Activesync as well. Ill get on this tomorrow (its night time here in UK)- many thanks for your trouble. Cheers Kim

Several things you can check: 1. Make sure your DMP is installed. DMPSetup.log in [[SCCMInstallationDir]]\logs\DMPSetup.log 2. Open a IE from a desktop, http://[[DMPserverName]]/devicemgmt?selftest, (in native mode, youshould use https and need a client auth cert to browse the selftestwebsite)it should show your SiteCode something if your DMP works, and also you can check [[SMS_CCM]]/logs/dmpisapi.log, it will show you post a sefltest just now, SMS_CCM folder is your MP folder. 3. Whaterver you are using AS/LAN/Wifi/GPRS connection, your can open a IE on your mobile device, and tab http://[[DMPServer Name]]/devicemgmt?selftest to check if your mobile device can connectyour DMP. actually, SCCM2007 device management will use http post and get reply from the DMP server to communicate with DMP, so as long as the http pass, it should work. Before you launch a installer (launch clientxfer.exe on desktop / launch dminstaller_xxx_xxx.exe on mobile), make sure your device can reach DMPthrough http. 4. if you want deploy a native mode dm client, you need import your SSSC(site server signing certificate) cert chain(means all the certs from SSSC to your CA root cert), and copy all the certs to the installation folder, and set ImportCert=true, and SecurityMode=NativeMode in dmcommominstaller.ini(AS install)or clientsetting.ini(SD Card or OTA upgrade), of course, your DMP must be configged correctlyinclude site server mode is native mode and DMP IIS should be set SSL with a valid server authentification certificate. The installation process: 1. launch installer, dm client will be deployedon the mobile device 2. dm client will post a poll messge to DMP (you can see it in DMPisapi.log in MP folder), then DMP will reply dm client with dm client policys including poll interval, software inventory setting, hardware inventory setting, file collection settings and all the software distribution/device setting(CI) policies to dm client 3. dm client sent HINV/SINV/FC if they are enabled from 2#, and dowload instruction request for SWDist/DeviceSetting policy. 4. execute HINV/SINV/FC per interval, sent location request if you execute a SWDist/DeviceSetting program ,ad then execte. Note: 1. When a mobile device is connecting a desktop through active sync, the mobile device will use desktop network setting to communicate with DMP 2. Install dm client through AS - the dmcleintxfer will copy right cab/clientsetup.exe/dmclientinstall.exe/enroll.exe and certs to device folder \temp\ (some files need to be renamed), and create a clientsetting.ini based on dmcommoninstaller.ini, and then launch dminstall.exe. so if you want deploy dm client using sd card, you have to prepare all the binaries yourselft (selet correct cab/clientsetup/installer/eroll, edit client setting... Let me know if you need more info. Thanks -Zhonggang

Hello,I am looking into this as well for a customer. So, from what I am gathering from this post, it is conceivable to manage Smartphone only with activesync (i.e only when the device in "docked" to a PC?) Can you distribute software to it then ?And does that mean that you don't need a Wireless?Last question (probably dumb), you can't connect a smartphone directly to the lan can you ?Cheers,P.
