Missing data when copying site after saving original site as a template
Hi All, System Overview: SharePoint 2007 SP1 running on Windows Server 2003 R2 Enterprise Edition Service Pack 2. SharePoint and associated databases are all running on the same single server setup. I was asked to make a copy of a site so I went about it by saving the site along with the content database as a template, then I created a new site using the newly created template. Now all seemed fine, however, I noticed some data was missing. To clarify we used one of Microsoft's fantastic 40 templates (bugs database to be exact) and we noticed text for the "Description" field was missing for some bugs but not all - how can this be? Interestingly all the other fields appear to be fine and are populated, but for some strange reason the text for the "Description" field is missing for some bugs. I would greatly appreciate any help on this as this has totally stumped me! Kind regards,

The Fab 40 sites do not tend to migrate very well due to some internal references. There are also a number of lists that were configured so that they cannot be saved as templates. While I haven't looked at that template in awhile I think you are going to need to set this up starting with the site definition at the target location.SharePoint MVP | Developer | Administrator | Speaker-- Twitter -- Blog - http://nextconnect.blogspot.com

Hi Mike how would I go about creating a site definition? Apologies as I've never dealt with this feature of MOSS 2007 before. Is there an online guide that highlights the steps involved? Many thanks for your help!

Sorry for the confusion. What I meant was create the site again at the new location by selecting the clean template. Basically rebuild the site in the new location.SharePoint MVP | Developer | Administrator | Speaker-- Twitter -- Blog - http://nextconnect.blogspot.com
