Minimum permissions to allow users to respond to survey
Morning all,I have created a survey which has been authorised to go live. I am looking to give an AD group with a few hundred users access to the survey so they can respond. However, I am finding it difficult to create a custom permission level (this will be used repeatedly throught our SharePoint environment) that allows the user to access the survey and successfully submit their repsonse. I can get the users to the survey and when they click respond.... it shows the first question. When they click on Next, it shows access denied!I can only get this working if I use contribute or full control but I don't want the user's going in and changing the q's/deleting the survey etc etc.Does anyone know the minimum permissions to allow what I require?TIA

From past experience, Contribute is the minimum permission level required to respond to a survey. This won't allow them to change the survey questions. Also remember to give them the Edit their own response permission in the advanced settings of the survey.

The Edit their own response setting was the key here. Thanks!

A SharePoint group could be created specifically for survey respondants. You'd just need to create a new group for this by going to Site Settings Modify All Site Settings > Permissions > Settings > Permission Levels (from the drop down). Click on the Contribute group. Click Copy Permission Level. Name it like Survey Respondants and uncheck anything that has to do with deleteing things. Then click Create. Add your AD group into this group. Add this group to your survey permissions. You now have a reusableSharePoint group you can use for other targeted surveys in the future. eric

Hi Dave,I have exactly the same issue that you have, can you tell me how do you resolved the issue of access denied after respond the survey or when the users click on next or save button? in advance I appreciate your help.Ivan Salazar Guatemala

Ivan, I created a custom permissions group based on the default Contribute group (as PirateEric explains above). I removed the delete options from this. This allows the users to fill out a complete survey but they can still go in and change their answers afterwards (which wasn't a big deal for us)SharePoint Administrator | SharePoint Fan http://davepyett.wordpress.com - Follow me on twitter: twitter.com/dpyett

Thanks PirateEric, solution worked great for my site with readonly users who do need elevated persmissions to respond to surveys. One important thing to note is that after creation the new group would need to be removed from Site permissions (Site Settings > Site Permissions, select new group, click "Remove User Permissions" button) otherwise the readonly users will actually have contribute-but-not-delete rights to the whole site as a default.
