Need more info like network topology. Is it Windows 2003 domain / forest environment or just a test lab where only Windows 2003 sever installed and you want to upgrade to windows 2008?

your description is not really to understand. Did you already start an update and now the server is not working anymore?

You can only go back if you have a backup from before.

Also it is important to know which server roles and applications are running on the server BEFORE starting an upgrade.

Be sure to have all drivers available from the hardware vendor for the new OS version.
