I am having issues of database storage whereby the only solution i can see for our sharepoint deployment at present is to migrate our 32 bit standalone installation to a new 64 bit Farm installation using sql 2008 express, can this be done? if so what do i need to look out for, i have a large document control workflow that is the most important part of our sharepoint wssv3 environment.

You are probably in your standalone WSS 3.0 installation using the default version of SQL Server 2005 Express (called the "Windows Internal Database" which does not have a limit on the size of databases. Moving to a farm installation of WSS 3.0 with the normal version of SQL Server 2005 Express (you can no longer use the Windows Internal Database once you move away from the single server solution) means that you will then have a database size limit of 4GB. If you do move to a farm installation you should therefore seriously consider moving to full SQL Server 2005 in order to regain your unlimited database sizes. P.S.
