Migrating SCOM 2007 R2 from Remote SQL 2005 to Remote SQL 2008 R2
Hi I'm in need to format the machine running SQL for SCOM today, so I need to migrate SCOM databases. So I've got a SCOM 2007 R2 running on two remote SQL 2005 servers (Operations DB on one server and DW and reporting on another) I want to put this databases SQL 2008 R2, But I don't want to reinstall SCOM 2007, is there a way to migrate? I've checked this KB http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2425714 and see its only fit to a new SCOM 2007 R2 installation, and it says a Hotfix will be launched with the fix so this can work. Is there any news on this? anyone performed something similar? Thanks, GabrielGabriel Guimares

Upgrades \ migrations to SQL 2008 R2 are not yet supported - only clean installs. Expect something early in 2011 for upgrades \ migrations to SQL 2008 R2.View OpsMgr tips and tricks at http://systemcentersolutions.wordpress.com/

Thanks Graham, this is actually lame =/ By the way I've been told that Inplace Migrations of SQL actually work. (I haven't tried this)Gabriel Guimares

Hi, As far as I know, upgrading from SQL 2005 to SQL 2008 R2 is not supported currently and it will come with a future CU for System Center Operations Manager 2007 R2. In the following post, we can see “Supporting this scenario will be coming as part of a future CU for R2. Stay tuned!”. OM2007R2 Support for SQL 2008 R2 http://blogs.technet.com/b/momteam/archive/2010/09/28/om2007r2-support-for-sql-2008-r2.aspx Hope this helps. Thanks. Graham is correct; Microsoft currently supports for clean installations but not yet for existing ones. I know its not the answer you wanted - for now I'd say just put use a supported version of SQL and do the upgrade when the CU is out. Microsoft doesn't want to support something until they have tested it and know there won't be any issues they can't resolve. Their current approach is using the cumulative updates for things like this - in the past we had to wait for a service pack. CUs come out much quicker!

This question is not answered, when the hotfix is available there will be a procedure to how to update this, until then it is not answered.Gabriel Guimares

Cumulative Update 4 is out there and its said to allow update to sql 2008 r2. I'm still having problems installing it I'm wondering whats the upgrade path? Am I supposed to upgrade to SQL 2008 with SP1, and then to SQL 2008 R2? I'm also having a problem where I execute the MSI with my Domain Admin, and I get the error, that the administrator has set a policy that prevents that installation... What am I supposed to do? Hi Anders, I've installed CU 4, however I have not tried an upgrade to SQL 2008 R2 yet. I haven't found enough documentation on the how to do it from SQL 2005 to SQL 2008 R2, docs are still not very in much depth, so I'm not secure about the transfer. Do you have any documentation, articles, blog posts, experience about this migration ? SCOM 2007 R2 with CU4 in SQL 2005 to SQL 2008 R2? Thanks in advance. Gabriel Guimarães

Hi, If you do a new SQL installation you could use the solution her to moe the database to a SQL 2008 R2 http://www.packtpub.com/article/moving-a-database-from-sql-server-2005-to-sql-server-2008-in-three-steps Around upgrade from SQL 2005 to SQL 2008 start by verify that your scenario is supported here http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms143393.aspx After that all steps are here http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms144267.aspx , step by step.Anders Bengtsson | Microsoft PFE | blog at http://www.contoso.se

Hi Anders this is not a question about SQL, Its about migrating the SCOM 2007 R2 databases, as it was not supported by SCOM 2007 R2 nativelly. So, I need a way to migrate my SCOM 2007 R2 databases and reporting to SQL 2008 R2 and make sure SCOM works normally with it. If I could reinstall SCOM 2007 R2 on a SQL 2008 R2 and import my data this will also be a good thing.Gabriel Guimares

Hi Anders, I know that it is supported I posted here when the CU4 was released announcing the support for SQL 2008 R2, but back then the documentation on how to migrate from sql 2005 to 2008 r2 wasn't available, just on how to migrate from sql 2008. Now the KB is updated and points to this article, when I have the time to test the procedure I'll post the results here. Thanks. Gabriel Guimares
