Migrate Sharepoint 3.0 sites to new domain
I'm sure this must be a fairly frequent task, given the number of SBS installations there are out there, but I am finding it difficult to find information on moving a Sharepoint 3.0 site from one domain to another. I can't see how it can be done without losing all the links between documents and their owners, as all the tp_login and tp_title, tp_email, etc information from dbo.userinfowon't be relative to the new domain. I don't know if smigrate works with 3.0? Does stsadm backup/restore work? Does anybody have a definitive answer? Regards, Steve

Not sure if it's even possible just thinking about it. The only way to have it work perfectly is to have the same domain name / usernames as before to work with the documents and such. I've taken sites off our network servers where I currently work and placed them in our test lab where users from the live network don't exist. The site works fine, it would just lose functionality of those users logging in. I also use an administrator account on the test server so I have access to all the files.

Well basically heres the situation. We had an old domain name (ABC) with sharepoint services 3.0 on it. We still do, however we've merged with another organization and created a new domain (ABCD). The sharepoint server still runs on the old domain, however our users just have to authenticate again when they access it.I basically want to demote that server from (ABC) and rejoin it to (ABCD) --> the new domain. Not sure what types of complications are invovled. Make sense?

Yup, makes perfect sense. The best thing to do would be to test it and see what happens if you're unsure. Problem I think is that all theuser accountsthat are currently added in SharePoint are (ABC) and if you move the serverto the new domain(ABCD) thedomain on the user accountsare still going to be (ABC). That's the problem I'm foreseeing. Someone would have to probably add every account again to each site as well as remove the old ones. That would probably cause more harm than good. The sites and everything will still fun fine, there would just be issues with user accounts. Anyone else ever go through this before?

The problem, as you say, is user permissions and authentication.Butthiscanbefixedbyusingthe"stsadm -o migrateuser"tool.Ihavedonethismyself,anditworkperfectly.Youshouldalsobeawareofthat,ifyouplantomovethesitebyusingsharepointbackup/restore,thatallthefilesthatisstoredlocallyontheserverhavetobemovedmanually.
