Migrate/run SQL Server 2000 DTS/2005 SSIS package from an old server to/at BIDS 2008 at a new server?
I had developed a SQL Server 2000 DTS package long time ago. Then we had SQL Server 2005 and I had successfully migrated the DTS to a SSIS package. Now we have SQL Server 2008 and VS 2008 installed at a new server. 1. Can I run SQL Server 2005 SSIS package directly from this new server with BIDS 2008? 2. I tried to migrate SQL Server 2000 DTS package directly to BIDS/VS 2008. An error popped up indicating that I can migrate DTS package ONLY created by SQL Server 2008 -- the Next button was not activated. Why? 3. Can I migrate the BIDS 2005 SSIS package from the old server to the BIDS 2008 SSIS package at the new server? Thanks.Jeffrey

3. Can I migrate the BIDS 2005 SSIS package from the old server to the BIDS 2008 SSIS package at the new server? Absolutely! In fact, you can either run them as-is, or open them in BIDS 2008 by downloading them from the SQL Server location and doing so upgrades them to 2008. After that, the upgraded packages can only be deployed to SQL 2008 servers or run via SQL Agent on a 2008 instance.Todd C - MSCTS SQL Server 2005 - Please mark posts as answered where appropriate.

Hi Jeffrey, Make sure that you allocate some time to enhance your SSIS 2005 package leveraging great enhancements that have come up in SSIS 2008, and get the best benefits from package upgrade rather than retaining the package with SSIS 2005 features. Ofcourse it depends on whether there is something that you can leverage to replace SSIS 2005 feature with enhanced feature of SSIS 2008.
