Microsoft Money 2004 UK crashes at startup

I see there are others who've bugged this via the feedback
application, but does anyone have a work-around?

Other than a win 8 VM I cannot find any.

You should be aware that Microsoft discontinued all online services and assisted support for all versions of Money on January 31, 2011.

I am.

:) snap. I've had to resort to a VM too.

I've never had any such problem with Money with prior OS's. It was
fine on 8.1.

It's a bit worrying as the crash occurs in the mfc42 DLL, and
depending on the nature of the problem, I guess a lot of old programs
could have the same issue.

Fingers crossed here. If you continue to crash we should look at the DMP files for clues.

I'm fairly certain that Microsoft is not overly concerned about supporting

I'm fairly certain that Microsoft is not overly concerned about supporting
programs that are 15 years old on Windows 10. :-)

I'd sincerely hope they will be concerned. Windows is renowned for
jumping through hoops to ensure that older well used programs continue
to work on newer versions of the OS.

Sorry Paul, but why would you be concerned? There's nothing about a
program that stores its data on my hard disk and no longer has any
online capabilities that would create any particular security issues.
Has it got known MS trojan's? Please don't create FUD where there
shouldn't be any.

I'd be significantly more concerned about using one of the newer
online services - which is why I (and I suspect many others) still use
a good old version of MS Money.

Not that old. What's next, adding or modifying code to support Windows NT
or Windows 3.1 apps? Legacy support for apps that old is provided via
virtualization these days. MFC42.dll is even older as it was first released
around the year 2000. So now you're talking about a DLL that is 15 years
old, used by an app that is 11 years old, both of which are completely out
of support.

Microsoft, with Windows 10, has much higher priorities than providing
support for apps and runtime libraries that are that old.

So this local computer is never connected to the Internet? Just because
your data is stored locally doesn't make it safe. There could be any number
of attack vectors, such as buffer overflows, in Microsoft Money 2004 or
mfc42.dll that could possibly be exploited and won't be patched. I'm not
saying there are, simply that the possibility exists.

Please don't create FUD where there
shouldn't be any.

Build 10041 has resolved the issue for me. Money 2004 UK now runs.

Dave, I also have same problem with MSMoney & Win10 TPV Builds 10049 & 10061.

Windows TPV Build 10049 running Microsoft Money crashes when sync electronically to  import & balance your downloaded financial statements. This behavior is verifiable & repeatable. Did not occur in Win 10 TPV Builds 9926 & 10041, XP, Vista, Win7, Win 8 or Win 8.1.  I wonder if this bug was introduced by adding the new Project Spartan browser to Win 10 TPV 10049.

I know MSMoney is a discontinued Microsoft product since June 2009. However, I have over 10 years of financial records in MSMoney. I purchased & tried Quicken 2015. I prefer MSMoney over Quicken 2015.  MSMoney worked fine on previous Microsoft OSes (XP, Vista, Win7, Win 8 or Win 8.1) until Win 10 TPV Build 10041. See screenshot errors below.

So to work around the MSMoney  issues above. I installed Window 7 in Hyper-V VM just to run MSMoney & manage my finances. What a pain!!!

Quicken 2015 will be the big winner in this bug introduced in Win 10 TPV. I am an ex Microsoft employee. Worked at Microsoft for nearly 10 years. I have to agree with Paul Adar statement earlier in this conversation thread. "I too am fairly certain that Microsoft is not overly concerned about supporting programs that are 11 years old on Windows 10. :-)"

I spent over 8 hours today exporting my 10 Plus years of Microsoft Money financial data in Quicken 2015. Sadly, the Sun is about to truly about to set on MSMoney.

My Opinion is that MSMoney is still the best Personal Finance Management Software ever released for the Windows desktop PC.

I am being forced to use Quicken. Much rather stick with good Ol' MSMoney. Running Windows 7 in a Hyper-V VM just to balance my checkbook is overkill. Like swatting a fly with a sledge hammer.

This is a total stab in the dark, but I've found that quite a few Microsoft applications bomb on opening in the Tech Preview, but run fine if run as admin. (Right click in explorer, choose "run as administrator".)

This seems to make a difference with SQL Server, Visual Studio, and others, even if your account has admin privileges.

People who think that MS Money is a security risk will probably not endorse this solution, but it might just get you going.

Good luck,

Jordie Fulton
