Metadata term set removal sharepoint 2010

Hi,

We need to remove couple date entries from Metadata term set. How to know if it is safe to this. If this term set is not used anywhere in SharePoint 2010? Is any SQL query to check this?

Can you mark them as depreciated? That will prevent them being used without running the risk of deletion.
