Memory for MOSS 2007 databases
Hi, We have MOSS 2007 SP1 databases on SQL Server 2005 EE x64 with SP3 and currently have 16 GB RAM. Right now the content database size is 40 GB and we expect it to grow 100 GB in couple of months. So what will be the suitable memory for having 100 GB content databases? Thanks

You certainly don't need 16GB. I don't really see why you think there is a major connection between main memory and the size of your databases. More important is that you have several site collections so that if your content database reaches 100GB you can split it into two.FAQ sites: (SP 2010) http://wssv4faq.mindsharp.com; (v3) http://wssv3faq.mindsharp.com and (WSS 2.0) http://wssv2faq.mindsharp.com Complete Book Lists (incl. foreign language) on each site.

Hi, 4 gigabytes (GB) is the minimum required memory, 8 GB is recommended for medium size deployments, and 16 GB and greater is recommended for large deployments. Best Regards, Ammar MCT http://ahmed-ammar.blogspot.com Posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights.

Hi Mike, You certainly don't need 16GB. I don't really see why you think there is a major connection between main memory and the size of your databases. More important is that you have several site collections so that if your content database reaches 100GB you can split it into two. The reason I'm asking is, when ever I ran DBCC Integrity check Maintenance plan job, the Page Life Expectancy (PLE) drops to low values like 4 or 5 sec and after the job is completed the PLE is again increasing. So I'm thinking that it's because of low Memory and want make sure the required RAM for having 100 GB content database Please clarify me

Hi Ereti, For the purposes of determining the amount of memory required for the computers that are running SQL Server 2005, first determine whether the planned deployment is small, medium, or large in terms of memory consumption. For more information about the memory recommendation in SharePoint, please refer to the following article: Physical topology recommendations (Office SharePoint Server) http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc298578.aspx In addition, you can limit content database size to enhance manageability. · In most circumstances, to enhance the performance of Office SharePoint Server 2007, we discourage the use of content databases larger than 100 GB. If your design requires a database larger than 100 GB, follow the guidance below: · Use a single site collection for the data. · Use a differential backup solution, such as SQL Server 2005 or Microsoft System Center Data Protection Manager, rather than the built-in backup and recovery tools. For more information about performance and capacity planning, please refer to the following article: About performance and capacity planning (Office SharePoint Server) http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc261700.aspx Hope this helps.
