Max Web Front Ends in WSS 3?
Is there a max number of web front ends we can have in WSS3? We have a requirement to load balance ~1800 people with no more than 300 per WFE. Any issues with 6-8 WFEs load balanced and connecting to a single SQL server backend?

The Resource Center link Daniel provided is outstanding, and should have all of the information you're going to want about capacity planning for SharePoint environments. There is a page in there titled "Estimate Performance and Capacity Requirements for portal collaboration environments" (assuming you're not using this for web content management) that will have the most pertinent info for you regarding solid data from Microsoft on capacity and performance. In my experience, as well as info I've gotten directly from people at MS, is that you shouldn't have more than six WFEs hosting a single load-balanced web application. Beyond that point, you're at a minimum going to see performance level off as you add additional servers (which actually starts to happen at four servers, further reducing the value of adding more than four) and are very likely to start running into performance bottlenecks with your SQL Server instance as it tries to keep up with all the requests its getting. I've got to ask, what's driving the requirement of no more than 300 users per WFE? It seems to me that with a properly provisioned infrastructure, even a virtualized one, you should have no problem handling 1,800 users load balanced between two WFEs, as long as your usage profile is fairly standard. I can understand if you've got some unusual usage plans or security requirements, but in general you're not going to be pushing SharePoint into the red w/ two WFEs for that size of user group unless the hardware is severely underpowered, if your usage is fairly vanilla.
