Manual archive moves emails to dumpster of primary mailbox

When i manually move emails to my personal archive mailbox , the emails also appear in Dumpster of the primary mailbox (just like when moving email to PSTs)
But when the emails move to Personal archive mailbox due to auto-archiving by managed folder assistant they does not appear in Dumpster of Primary mailbox.

What is the logic/reason behind this ?

Hi SSN,

It all depends on the Retention Policy that you are using to do the cleanup. When you are manually moving you are only doing Move to Archive and Delete and Allow Recovery.

Maybe you policy says something else.

A retention policy can contain the following tags:

  • One DPT with the Move to Archive action

  • One DPT with the Delete and Allow Recovery or Permanently Delete actions

Run this to find out your settings

(Get-RetentionPolicy "Default MRM Policy").RetentionPolicyTagLinks | Format-Table name

When the managed folder assistant (MFA) runs, it performs the following tasks:

  • It locates items in folders that are past their expiration date and takes whatever action is defined in the policy (delete, move to Archive).

Hi SSN,

Base on my test, this is a by design behavior.

When we manually move emails to the personal archive mailbox, there are two actions in the background: Copy the message to the archive mailbox Delete the message to Dumpster. So we can see it in both the personal archive mailbox and the Dumpster.
When the emails move to Personal archive mailbox due to auto-archiving by managed folder assistant, it just like cut and paste. In this case, this message would be completely moved to the personal archive mailbox.

Thanks Satyajit and Niko.

Niko, as per the above reply from Satyajit when we manually move it does Move to archive and DeleteandAllow recovery. is this logic behind the design behaviour ?
