Managing PDF versions with WSS 3.0
Hi there, I was just wondering if you would be able to assist me with a particular problem that I have at the moment. I have a document library in Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 that needs to be able to record version changes between Adobe PDF's. Take an example here I add a PDF datasheet to the document library then a new version of the datasheet becomes available. I would like to be able to upload the datasheet to the document library as a new version of the old datasheet. Is this possible?Regards, Jonathon Forgeson IT Systems Administrator 4RF Communications Ltd.

Hi, I am assuming the newer versions of the pdf's will have the same file names as the old ones. How are they being created? Adobe's Acrobat X Pro includes SharePoint integration, including versioning. http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobatpro/pdf-version-control-sharepoint-integration.html Best wishes, Eric

Hi Eric, They could be created like that, or they could be downloaded from the internet. They should have the same name. I did see that Adobe X Pro has SharePoint integration but its a bit expensive to install on everyones machine to have version control of PDF's. Eric, I might be missign something but have you considered using versioning? You can set the major/minor settings in the Document Library settings, which specifies many are retained. If this isn't what you meant, please advise.Steven Andrews | SharePoint Professional | http://www.twitter.com/backpackerd00d | https://baron72.wordpress.com/

Hi, Steve, I am not the original poster, but thanks for your reply. I was under the impression that this wasn't possible with pdf's, since you weren't checking out the original file first. I now see that I may be mistaken. Jonathon, ensure you have versioning enabled for the library. Then on the page where you upload new files, make sure the check box is selected for "Add as a new version to existing files". I've seen in some discussions that versioning works with pdf's and some that say it doesn't. Please let us know the results. Best, Eric

Ok, some clarity might help here. A PDF document is, by design, a read only document. It won't open with Reader in the same way that Office Applications do with thier respective client applications. It'll probably open in the browser, or should do so by default. As you've mentioned already, the versioning on the document libraries needs to be activated in order to work. This should work respective of the type of file that's being uploaded. I'll carry out some testing of my own though and will check back in when I can.Steven Andrews | SharePoint Professional | http://www.twitter.com/backpackerd00d | https://baron72.wordpress.com/
