MS Word is losing its save location after a certain amount of time

we are having an intermittent problem where if we create a word document from sharepoint 2010.. then wait a while (1 minute to 10 minutes it changes) then click the save button in word (office 2013) the "Current Folder" (showing the current sharepoint location) disappears. Does anyone know why this would happen.  I have a hunch that its something to do with network connectivity since if I turn off and turn on my network adapter it has the same affect.

has anyone else had this problem?  how to troubleshoot (we have been looking at wireshark traces and haven't seen anything ob

Hi krd,

Based on your description, I recommend to verify the things below:

  1. Did you mean the location of the document under Current Folder was missing? So no location was listed under Current Location or Was there another location displayed?
  2. Check if this issue only occurs with the documents in SharePoint. Test with a document stored in your local drive.
  3. Check if the library where you created the document exists or not in SharePoint.

Could you please provide a screenshot of this issue for further research?

Thanks,

Victoria

we have started a MS support case on this it has been passed from the SharePoint team to the MS office team

the case number is: 115021912421919

I was able to figure out that this problem is likely stemming from a recent KB, because if I try this on an older unpatched machine the problem goes away.. this problem is recreatable on any machine in our network right now...

no location was listed (sharepoint location) and this only happens for files in sharepoint...

I have this problem all the time and most of the time its related to Network connectivity of my users. My users are all around the globe with SharePoint hosted in US. It works for the same user if he tries after sometime. There is no specific pattern.

I would be interested to know what MS finds on the ticket that you opened. Please keep us posted. Thanks.

after several days of setting up a virtualized environment and then testing by installing patches and checking if Office breaks, I have isolated this problem to KB2920798

When i install this patch the problem comes up and when i uinstall it the problem goes away... i have notified support of this issue..

https://support.microsoft.com/kb/2920798?wa=wsignin1.0

Sagir, we may or may not be having the same issue, my clients are on a high speed local network so i should not be having network connectivity issues...

another update has been released which is causing the same issue it is KB2956151... I still don't have a resolution from Microsoft.  The workaround is to rip out the security patch from the office client.  Updating my SharePoint 2010 server environment to the March 2015 CU was supposed to resolve the issue, but it did not...

I have a call scheduled with an escalation engineer on the office team for Wednesday (finally), will report back on how it goes
June 15th, 2015 3:53pm

here is the update: this problem is an office problem (replicated by the escalation engineer) and the problem happens with the latest security patches from office for sharepoint 2010 and sharepoint 2013 !  the escalation engineer is going to submit a bugfix request to the product team yay!  will let you know when it is fixed.  My question to the forum/world is: HOW COME NOBODY ELSE HAS NOTICED THIS BUG!!!  I mean you can't save your documents anymore, somewhere somebody must have noticed this????

Thanks for the update KRD. Since this bug might not be a showstopper and we have a workaround (save the document on the desktop and then upload to SharePoint) the users are okay doing that. In my case its also related to network connectivity problems as I mentioned above. Would be interested to know more about the MS patch for this issue.

I have not heard from MS Product team but the most recent office patches seem to have resolved our issue for now. Will post anything more I hear on this issue here...
