MP message ID 5436 (and 5480) on new install
In the middle of an SMS 2003 migration (side by side) upgrade to ConfigMgr SP1 on new hardware. SMS server upgraded to ConfigMgr 2007 sp1 just fine. (running SQL 2005 on that box with 2003 OS) New server is 2008 with SQL 2008 on 64 bit box. Installed ConfigMgr SP1 on this box. Added it as a child to the upgraded SMS to ConfigMgr server. Everything is showing as a "lock". The MP in the components of the child server is reporting 5436 message ID in SMS_MP_CONTROL_MANAGER. I have ran the MP Troubleshooter and everything passes except for the http communication MPCERT and MPLIST. Points to the 5436 ID but still doesn't point me to the solution. I have installed webdav on the box and went through the Authoring Rule for all content, all users, read permissions. Anonymous Auth. is enabled. BITS Server extensions installed...Remote Differential Compression installed. SQL Admin stated he verified the server account is a member of the SMSDBROLE_MP in database on same server. I have searched all over for two days and cannot figure what I am missing on this. Any ideas?

HTTP on mpcert and mplist are either IIS issues or SQL permissions. If neither work I'd say IIS. If cert works and list doesn't I'd lean towards SQL perimssions. John Marcum | http://myitforum.com/cs2/blogs/jmarcum/|

Hi, What's the error messages in MPcontrol.log on your child site server? I suggest youre-install IIS and MP to see whether it can fix your issue: 1. Uninstall the management point. 2. Uninstall the IIS component. 3. Restart the computer. 4. Uninstall Webdav. 5. Install IIS component, and enable BITS. 6. Install Webdav, and configurate it. If you used Windows Server 2008 as the site server, see this article and make sure the webdev was enabled and configured: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc431377.aspx Make sure BITS IIS server extension are installed http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc753301.aspx 7. Install management point. 8. Verify the management point was installed successfully in the MPSetup.log. Here is a snip of the log. I followed the link you first mention when I installed the server with webdav, remote diff., etc. Bit extensions were installed as well. I have the WSUS site on the IIS configuration so I am reluctant to remove IIS and mess that up as well. I have removed the MP many times as well as removing Webdav with no positive rewards. I re-ran the MP Troubleshooter and it always fails with the Test MPCERT HTTP or HTTPS request functionality and Test MPLIST HTTP or HTTPS request functionality. In IIS the Default Website shows a globe with a question mark and the site has a status of started for (http) but the bindings before that are Unknown (net.tcp), (net.pipe), (net.msmq), (msmq.formatname) is this an issue? (I don't show these bindings in my test environment but I don't have SQL 2008 on that box ... I have 2005. The machine account has smsdbrole_MP and the machine has db_owner role. I did the spn check which shows: MSSQLSvc/server_name.domain MSSQPSvc/server_name.domain:1433 TERMSRV/server_name TERMSRV/server_name.domain HOST/server_name HOST/server_name.domain Call to HttpSendRequestSync failed for port 80 with status code 500, text: Internal Server Error $$<SMS_MP_CONTROL_MANAGER><Wed Dec 01 07:43:16.387 2010 Eastern Standard Time><thread=6412 (0x190C)> Http test request failed, status code is 500, 'Internal Server Error'.~ $$<SMS_MP_CONTROL_MANAGER><Wed Dec 01 07:43:16.388 2010 Eastern Standard Time><thread=6412 (0x190C)> Successfully performed Management Point availability check against local computer.~ $$<SMS_MP_CONTROL_MANAGER><Wed Dec 01 07:43:16.388 2010 Eastern Standard Time><thread=6412 (0x190C)> Call to HttpSendRequestSync failed for port 80 with status code 500, text: Internal Server Error $$<SMS_MP_CONTROL_MANAGER><Wed Dec 01 07:43:16.391 2010 Eastern Standard Time><thread=6412 (0x190C)> Http test request failed, status code is 500, 'Internal Server Error'.~ $$<SMS_MP_CONTROL_MANAGER><Wed Dec 01 07:43:16.391 2010 Eastern Standard Time><thread=6412 (0x190C)> Successfully performed Device Management Point availability check against local computer.~ $$<SMS_MP_CONTROL_MANAGER><Wed Dec 01 07:43:16.391 2010 Eastern Standard Time><thread=6412 (0x190C)> Call to HttpSendRequestSync failed for port 80 with status code 500, text: Internal Server Error $$<SMS_MP_CONTROL_MANAGER><Wed Dec 01 07:48:16.399 2010 Eastern Standard Time><thread=6412 (0x190C)> Http test request failed, status code is 500, 'Internal Server Error'.~ $$<SMS_MP_CONTROL_MANAGER><Wed Dec 01 07:48:16.400 2010 Eastern Standard Time><thread=6412 (0x190C)> Successfully performed Management Point availability check against local computer.~ $$<SMS_MP_CONTROL_MANAGER><Wed Dec 01 07:48:16.401 2010 Eastern Standard Time><thread=6412 (0x190C)> Call to HttpSendRequestSync failed for port 80 with status code 500, text: Internal Server Error $$<SMS_MP_CONTROL_MANAGER><Wed Dec 01 07:48:16.404 2010 Eastern Standard Time><thread=6412 (0x190C)> Http test request failed, status code is 500, 'Internal Server Error'.~ $$<SMS_MP_CONTROL_MANAGER><Wed Dec 01 07:48:16.404 2010 Eastern Standard Time><thread=6412 (0x190C)> Successfully performed Device Management Point availability check against local computer.~ $$<SMS_MP_CONTROL_MANAGER><Wed Dec 01 07:48:16.404 2010 Eastern Standard Time><thread=6412 (0x190C)>

Another question this is Windows 2008 R2 or Windows 2008? cause SCCM 2007 SP1 MP on Windows 2008 R2 is not supported.

This is Windows 2008 sp1 - 64 bit Installed full sccm with sp1 fresh install - did not try to reinstall product but I sure see so many posts of people who have same issue but no real concrete fix for this issue. I have checked everything posted so far no resolution.

It's not exactly your issue, and maybe you have already read it but you can check this: http://blogs.technet.com/b/configurationmgr/archive/2010/10/26/error-the-webdav-server-extension-is-either-not-installed-or-not-configured-properly-in-configuration-manager-2007.aspx Julien

SCCM client is installed on server? If yes, You can try to remove MP, remove client then reinstall MP and client.

Hi, I had a very similar situation and think I have just fixed it. Mine is a new installation, one site server on windows 2008r2 using a remote sql2008r2 sql server. I had critical error on site status with availability failed. Event 5436 and 5480 logged every hour. In short, this is what I have done: 1. in management point properties, remove "allow devices to use this management point. THis stops error 5480 but error 5436 still occurs; 2. Discovered SQL service account does not have its SPN regidtered in AD. So have it registered. This makes big difference. 3. Discovered BITS is installed but not enabled. So have it enabled. (tick "allow clients to upload file") 4. delete and re-add management point server role and reboot the server. after this I see the site availability becomes offline 5. reset the counter for errors Then after a little while I see a healthy site with all green tick icons and OKs. Of course, my situation may differ from yours but good luck. Cheers,

Thanks TreeLeafs for your reply! I have checked out SPNs and they appear correct. BITS is installed and enabled. Yesterday I removed webdav, IIS, configmgr with reboots all the way. Removed the database. I also removed WSUS and WSUS database. Installed everything back on according to the documentation for 2008 server and still the MP Troubleshooter fails for http connection for MPCERT and MPLIST. Any ideas?

It appears there was a client from the old sms server which I uninstalled. It didn't make a difference. I then uninstalled MP and rebooted - reinstalled MP ... still same issue.

Have you checked the setting in Application Pool where there is an option something like "enable 32 bit application on 64 bit"? I think this should be set to faulse. Remember check both Application Pool default level and the particular application ....MP x64 level. Hope it helps.

TreeLeafs - Is this in a document some where when you setup or migrate to SCCM 2007 or is this something that YOU deal with on a regular basis and know to look there?
December 6th, 2010 10:26am

Why the enable 32 bit application on a 64 bit setting it to False in IIS does not appear in the documentation is really puzzling to me. So for the other lost souls out there trying to find the answer to getting your MP working on a 64 bit server - check out the IIS settings - Application Pools - SMS Management Point Pool x64 - click on advanced settings - Enable 32-Bit Applications should be set to False. Shame on someone for not documenting this well. I had to pay for support to get this working and was told this is not documented and internal to Microsoft. I don't know if I believe it but I had searched a whole week trying to find answers and finding nothing. But I am sure someone will point it out to me now. Unfortunately TreeLeafs was a day too late for me! Thanks for actually trying to help me!

Same here has jarrod1235135. I've tried everything in this thread to no avail: I have one central site on a VMWare VM running Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard w/SP1 (x64) and 10 secondary sites, all on physical 2003 servers working fine. This problematic secondary site is installed on a Hyper-V VM running Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard w/SP1 (x64). The Hyper-V host is Window Server 2008 Enterprise SP1 (x64) Core Edition. MPCERT works, but MPLIST doesn't (http 500 error). Status message viewer shows message id 5436. I have verified every recommendation in the status message details is satisfied. Any takers?

Well here is my resolution forthe MS ticket I had put in back on 2010 which I always refer to when I have to rebuild a secondary site on a 64 bit server: >> We found that IIS is not working >> Webdav is not configured. We configured it as follows: ***************************************************************************** 1.In the WebDAV Authoring Rules page, in the Actions pane, click WebDAV Settings. 2.In the WebDAV Settings page, for Property Behavior, set Allow anonymous property queries to True. 3.Set Allow Custom Properties to False. 4.Set Allow property queries with infinite depth to True. 5.For a distribution point that is enabled for Allow clients to transfer content from this distribution point using BITS, HTTP, and HTTPS, for WebDAV Behavior, set Allow hidden files to be listed to True. 6.In the Action pane, click Apply. ************************************************************************************* >> We edited bindings in IIS which are not correct. >> We reset IIS. >> We Installed ASP.net and .net framework which was not installed. >> We enable 64bit mode on IIS 7.0 : ************************************************************* 1. Open IIS 7.0 manager, highlight "application pool" 2. Then select "sms management point pool x64" > right click on client advance settings enable 32 bit application > turn it to false 3. open command prompt, run aspnet_regiis - i from c:\windows\Microsoft.net\framework64\v2.0.50727 4. run iisreset. *************************************************************** >> Error in Mpcontrol.log ===================================== "CMPControlManager::GetDnsServiceName(): DNS publishing is not enabled." ===================================== >> Steps We tried to resolve this issue: ******************************************************* To solve the issue uncheck the DNS publishing box under System Center Configuration Manager/Site Database/Site Management/ SCCM Site>/Properties >Advanced TAB "Publish the default Management point in DNS (intranet only) apply and enable the box again and apply. ******************************************************** >> We installed Management Point which is successful. Call to HttpSendRequestSync succeeded for port 80 with status code 200, text: OK Good Luck - hope it helps!!

Thanks for the quick reply John. I would prefer to correct the SQL permissions if possible. Do you know of any documentation on exactly what those should be? If I have to fall back to re-installing the MP, is there an easy way to search SQL permissions for the computer account? Thanks.

It's really easy, just open anther secondary sites permissions in SQL and make sure the one that is failign has the same thing. Off the top of my head I think you need to make sure it has: Under Databases>Security>logins find the server that's not working. Right click>Properties>Server Roles = Public>User Mappings = check beside the SCCM_XXX database and default schema = dbo. Database role membership for SMS_XXX check beside public, check smsdbrole_MP. I did as you recommended but it didn't help. I opened a call with Microsoft. The engineer walked me through these steps: Remove just the Management Point role from the Secondary Site via the SCCM consoleMonitor the MPSetup.log to verify successful deinstallRun "CCMCLEAN.EXE /MP" locally on the Secondary Site server (version 2.50.3025.1000)Add the Management Point role back to the Secondary Site via the SCCM consoleMonitor the MPSetup.log to verify successful installMonitor the mpcontrol.log for 'Call to HttpSendRequestSync succeeded for port 80 (or whatever port your MP role is using) with status code 200, text: OKVerify /sms_mp/.sms_aut?mplist">http://<secondary site server>/sms_mp/.sms_aut?mplist work. So far, so good. The engineer did mention there were many sql-related issues in MP_GetAuth.log, such as this one, but not related to security on the SQL server. Something wrong on the Secondary Site Server that prevented the connection: MPDB ERROR - CONNECTION PARAMETERS SQL Server Name : <Central Site Server> SQL Database Name : <SMS Database Name> Integrated Auth : True MPDB ERROR - EXTENDED INFORMATION MPDB Method : Init() MPDB Method HRESULT : 0x80040E4D Error Description : Login failed for user 'DOMAIN\Secondary Site Server Computer Account$'.
