MOSS SMTP Issues
Hi, Does anyone know how to get around this problem: The user or users have been added successfully, but there was an error in sending the e-mail message. The server may not be set up correctly to send e-mail. To verify that e-mail is configured correctly, contact your server administrator. Thanks You've only got one life; help as many people as you can, and enjoy it while it lasts.

Hi again, Well talk of something working perfectly just fine and then it suddenly stops working and goes absolutely wrong....that is what I have right now. There is this review workflow that's supposed to go to reviewers , and there is this approval workflow that's supposed to go to approvers . Now, the workflow sends 2 types of emails: the first one to notify the initiator of the workflow that his process has begun, and the second to notify whoever the task is meant for that you are to start this task. Well, I get the first one, and so do the other people who start a task BUT the recipients just never get it!!! arrrggghhhh!!! It's just totally crazy. Unfortunately, the SMTP service is not hosted on my farm, it's central to the environment, and it is UNIX based. typically for Windows SMTP you install the service, set it to use Integrated Windows Authentication, allow Anonymous, set it to Relay, specify the Allow List IP addresses, make sure no firewall setting is blocking SMTP Port 25 and that smtp is not set to use another port other than 25, verify the gateways, telnet the SMTP server for response and use script to send sample mail from the command prompt to see if goes through and of course use Network Monitor to FBI things... What haven't I tried? You've only got one life; help as many people as you can, and enjoy it while it lasts.

one thing that could happen is the recipients lack permissions to see the items. If the first set of mails are fired ok, the second should be.Emmanuel ISSALY - Sharepoint MCTS, MCNEXT (FR).

Hi, Yeah, you're right! Well, I did have that scenario before, when the recipients do not have permissions, it still sends the mail BUT with a first line that states that they lack the necessary permission and that a request should be made to that end, and goes on to add a link to be used for the request, and then iterates the normal stuff beneath that. Unfortunately the mail system is Lotus, that doesn't mean anything, does it? Well, more unfortunately they shank away by saying "its not our problem, we don't do application mails, go meet the smtp guys"...arrrggghhhhh! am pulling my hairs off! Anyway, am just here getting angry...and driiiiiiiinking coffee...You've only got one life; help as many people as you can, and enjoy it while it lasts.

If they lack permission to see the items, _NO_ mail will be sent because it is as if nothing happens for MOSS alerts :)Emmanuel ISSALY - Sharepoint MCTS, MCNEXT (FR).

Yes, usually this isn't something very deep on the sharepoint side, its more an issue with your server reaching the set smtp server. Go into central admin and then take a look at Operations>Outgoing email settings. Then open a command prompt and try to ping that server listed in your out bound email settings. That server should be able to be resolved to an IP (the ping may or may not actually work due to firewalls.) Whatever server that the ping resolves too needs to be checked to make sure that some smtp server is running (like Mina said, it might have just stopped). It also needs to be set to allow a relay from the IP of the sharepoint server, as well as have port 25 open. Often times if you are using a local smtp server, or just the basic one setup in iis, it will fail to start on a reboot (or sometimes just randomly). You just need to restart the service. You can also make sure that service is set to start on reboot (which sometimes its not) and that the service is set to recover on failure.

Hi all, Thank you so much all for your responses. It's been very helpful. well, I did get on the case of the UNIX guys, I poked them over, called them like crazy, showed up in their office as frquently till I became a nuisance...ha ha haha ha ha...then they complied! Got myself a work order ticket and sent them my WFEs individual and NLB IP addresses for them to configure, and guess what?...VOILA VOILA C'est ce que je parle! Every site in the portal sends the mails, except one other site...arrrrggghhhh! And quite unfortunately, this other site is critically undergoing UAT and a few heat is bubbling. Anyways, the site doesn't send the second e-mail but it sends the first e-mail and it sends every notifications, so that's a good way forward. So, summarily, every site sends e-mail but one. And this "one" sends all alerts properly but mails destined for recipients don't go. Now, the recipients have been given permission to the site, am talking of "Contribute" permission. Any further insight? You've only got one life; help as many people as you can, and enjoy it while it lasts.
