MOSS 2007 SSP Issue
We are trying to install MOSS 2007 for the first time and we are having some issues with creating our first SSP. We are using directions found at: http://www.datasprings.com/Resources/ArticlesInformation/OverviewonInstallingSharepoint2007/tabid/774/language/en-US/Default.aspxWe went through the process of creating the SSP and also created the web application for it. The SSP and web application look like they both have been created successfully, but when we click on “Create or configure this farm’s shared servers”, we get a page cannot be displayed message in IE. We have tried completely re-installing MOSS, but the same thing keeps happening. The central administration website is working correctly. All of the databases look like they have been created (we are using a dedicated SQL server that was already set up for other MOSS/WSS sites by an outside vendor) and IIS config shows the website and appliation pool. Could anyone give some suggestions on what we might be doing wrong? We arn't getting any error messages in the system logs. This is our first try at installing MOSS so any help would be appreciated.

Are you using a host header for your SSP? You might be running into this issue:http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/896861You'd get this if you were trying to login to the SSP from the server itself if it was using a host header.John SharePoint911: SharePoint Consulting Blog: http://www.rossonmoss.com Twitter: JohnRossJr MOSS Explained: An Information Workers Deep Dive into Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007

We are using a host header, but we get the same page cannot be displayed message when we try to log in to the SSP from other machines too. I've seen the 401.1 error message before on another machine, but this seems to be a different issue. The IE page that comes up when we try to open the SSP admin only says that the page can't be displayed, it doesn't give any other type of error message/code.

Check the event log on the server to see if any errors are coming up. Make sure that whatever username/password you are logging in with is the one you were signed in as when you did the MOSS install. Check to make sure the site is setup as a trusted site. Hi, Besides MVP John’s suggestion, please try to disable the CustomErrors in web.config of SSP site and see if you could get more information. To do this, you need to find the correct SSP web.config in C:\Inetpub\wwwroot\wss\VirtualDirectories. Find the customErrors section following http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/h0hfz6fc.aspx and change the value to Off. -lambertSincerely, Lambert Qin Posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights.

We looked into this issue more and it turns out that the reason it wasn't working was that we needed to add an entry in the local hosts file for the host header that we created since it wasn't set up on the network yet. Thanks for everyone's help!
