MOSS 2007 Configuration Failed
Hi,
My share point farm consists of two servers, one has MOSS installed on it and other is database server. Initially database server was also acting as web front end server and it was hosting web application on it. I removed the application and un-installed
MOSS from database server because I was having problem with reporting services. After removing every thing when I try to reinstall MOSS on database sever I get following error:
Configuration Failed message while running sharepoint products and technologies wizard.
it says
Failed to connect to the configuration database.
An exception of type System.Security.SecurityException was thrown. Additional exception information:
Access denied.

Apparently it seams to be security rights issue but the sharepoint database exists on the same server. Also the user which I am logged on and the user which I provide in configuration wizard both have admin right on db and system.
During whole process main MOSS server is working fine and serving pages.
thanks for your help

Did you use same username and password while install the MOSS first time???
Try to add current administrator name in content database.
Take a look into it

I dont know which user was used to install first time because it was some one else who installed it at first place.
current administrator is already a db owner of both content and config databases.
yes there is a possibility that the version I am trying to install is different from existing installation, so can you please tell me how can i determine which version and service pack is already installed on my server.
thanksAkbar

* Central Administration > Operations > Servers In Farm > Database Schema Version – You will see the Database Schema Version in the top of the screen and a list of servers with the version numbers listed in the relevant column
against each server in the farm
* Site Settings > Modify All Site Settings > Site Information > Database Schema Version - You will see the schema version of the site content database
* Query the Versions table of the farm configuration database – The entries in this table will show the version number and the date it was applied to the farm
Misleading Methods – The following methods are documented all over the web, but your results may be misleading
* IIS Web Site Properties > HTTP Headers Tab > Custom HTTP headers box which displays a version number – This shows the build version of MOSS at the time the Virtual Directory [Web Application] was created, which is probably
not what you’re looking for.
* Add / Remove Programs - Select Microsoft SharePoint Server 2007 or Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 > Click here for support information. This will show the current version of the software installed on a WFE server, but it does
not always update and may differ from other servers on the farm. For better results, use the methods listed above instead.
Hope this will help youCheers, Hemendra-MCTS "Yesterday is just a memory,Tomorrow we may never see"

thanks for your help and pointing to the right article
http://www.devcow.com/blogs/adnrg/archive/2008/01/12/adding-web-front-ends-be-at-the-same-code-base.aspx
it was nothing to do with security, it was the different versions of MOSS that were causing trouble.
In my case on the main server first MOSS 2007 was installed then sp1 and then sp2. and I was trying to install directly MOSS 2007 sp2 on my web front end. which was failing. So the key is that if you want to add a new web front end server to your farm use
the same media to install MOSS which you used to install the main server.
And Microsoft should try to give more accurate exception information rather than saying Access Denied failed to connect.Akbar
