MOSS/Sharepoint 2007 Email Configuration
Let me start with my hardware configuration. Small network with 2 servers. AD is NOT installed, and there isn't a Domain, just a Workgroup. Server A runs MailEnable for email. It requires authentication for email. Server B runs Sharepoint on a single box. No Farm, all service are on the same server. I need to forward emails from Sharepoint through the Server B MS SMTP Server to MailEnable. I need to forward emails sent to Sharepoint through MailEnable on Server A over to the Sharepoint Server (Server B) I have looked high and low (for quite a while now, like months) to find out how to configure Microsoft's SMTP Server on Server B to relay outgoing Sharepoint email to MailEnable. Most searches, including posts in this form (which is pre-Sharepoint 2010) are referring me to Knowledge Base documents about Sharepoint 2010. Looking for information on incoming email is even less available. I've tried using a Network Share folder (which is the incoming and outgoing SMTP folders on Server A) and having MOSS drop/pickup mail there. That didn't work. I tried configuring MS SMTP on Server B to forward outgoing from MOSS and that isn't working. Can someone provide me with some direction, the correct documentation or some page that helps me through how to make this work, configure local SMTP to forward to MailEnable? TIA Dan Cioffi

According to http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc287879.aspx#ConfigMailDropFolder, you can specify a particular e-mail drop folder, which enables SharePoint Foundation 2010 to retrieve incoming e-mail from a network share on another server. However, I am not sure whether SharePoint 2007 can also retrieve incoming email from network share on another server. I've tried using a Network Share folder (which is the incoming and outgoing SMTP folders on Server A) and having MOSS drop/pickup mail there. That didn't work. Have you checked your if all your web application pool identities and Windows SharePoint Services Timer service account have appropriate permission to the network share? You can assign full permission to test. For detail , please read http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc262947(office.12).aspx#section3 . I would appreciate if you share your test result. I tried configuring MS SMTP on Server B to forward outgoing from MOSS and that isn't working. You should also first check whether your web application pool identities and Windows SharePoint Services Timer service account have appropriate permission to send email to the SMTP server specified in Central Administration->Operations->Outgoing Email Settings Gu Yuming TechNet Subscriber Support in forum If you have any feedback on our support, please contact tngfb@microsoft.com
