Live Writer with WSS 3.0 getting 401.5 errors
I'm trying to get Live Writer to work with a WSS 3.0 SP2 farm server. This has worked before, and I just keep getting prompted for credentials even though I am the site collection administrator. i can log into the web site fine via the web browser with these credentials. In the IIS logs for this web application I am getting: 2010-06-28 10:35:18 <IPADDRESS> POST /_layouts/metaweblog.aspx - 80 - <IPADDRESS>Mozilla/4.0+(compatible;+MSIE+8.0;+Windows+NT+6.1;+Windows+Live+Writer+1.0) 401 5 0 1164 The server is also running Plesk administrator service which manages the mail on the server, other than that it is a vanilla Windows Server 2008 server. Any suggestions? The ipaddress is just masked out from the IIS logs snapshot above. Isn't that what you'd expect in them isn't it and not host header addresses? I masked them but to be honest if you ping my blog you'll see it anyway ;-0 2010-06-28 10:40:54 62.233.101.254 POST /_layouts/metaweblog.aspx - 80 - 124.148.206.69 Mozilla/4.0+(compatible;+MSIE+8.0;+Windows+NT+6.1;+Windows+Live+Writer+1.0) 401 5 0 1145 I can't add the IP address to the AAM because I'm using host headers and I have multiple sites running off port 80 with host headers. Appreciate your feedback, can you explain further your question around ip address?SharePoint Solution Architect, Perth Australia - Microsoft Virtual Technology Specialist - MCTS WSS Dev, WSS Adm, MOSS Dev, MOSS Adm - http://wss.made4the.net/ - Founder of http://www.sharepointdevwiki.com/

I ran Process Monitor as I tried to login via Live Writer and found some references to metadata.aspx here: 14:57:19.2466391 w3wp.exe 5012 CreateFile C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\12\template\layouts\metaweblog.aspx\web.config PATH NOT FOUND Desired Access: Generic Read, Disposition: Open, Options: Synchronous IO Non-Alert, Non-Directory File, Attributes: N, ShareMode: Read, Write, AllocationSize: n/a THAKEW79\sp_made4thenet Not sure why it's looking for that file there as it definitely doesn't exist. I couldn't see any errors in there for access is denied.
