Linking the Type (icon linked to document) to the url
I am using external documents in my sharepoint site and my Type (icon linked to document) does not link to my url (when document is updated the type icon url does not update). Any ideas on how to fix the external documents so the url updates as
well? (I have created a link to document, but I am getting a generic icon and thats not what we need.)
Thanks

I believe external documents are in different site (even it could be on non-SharePoint site) SharePoint points to the same URL even if you update the document data, but if you change the external document URL then you have to update the link in SharePoint
document library
Talking about link to document icon, you can replace the link to icon with your own icon in the list definition or you can replace the same icon file in LAYOUTS\IMAGES folder (not recommended) as it will effect for all sites in the farm or else you can have
one more copy of LAYOUTS folder then rename the folder ex: SITENAMELAYOUTS then pointing the new layouts folder in IIS virtual directory.
Also, by using JavaScript you can change the link to document icon, please follow the link for reference

So I think that this maybe a impossible modification without messing up the entire farm. So we have internal doc's and external doc's(my clients are using Type, URL Look Up, and Document Date in their SalesForce site, Just to give you a clearer picture on
what they are doing)
Internal/using upload
Type (Icon lined to document) = same http:\\spext.mydocumentnamehere.pdf
Name = same http:\\spext.mydocumentnamehere.pdf
URL = same http:\\spext.mydocumentnamehere.pdf
External/updating link
Type (Icon lined to document) = same http:\\spext.mydocumentnamehere.pdf
Name = same http:\\spext.mydocumentnamehere.pdf
URL = Different http:\\www.mydocumentnamehere.pdf
So when I update the external doc's, only the URL changes not the Type's URL. But I have fixed this by adding Link to a Document.
So what I need is to be able to upload a document and have SharePoint see the pdf, doc, ppt... as a generic document type as well. Any Ideas??
Thanks
