Limited Permissons not working
Recently the Limited permission level is no longer working. That is to say if I have a sub-site that does not inherit permissons from the parent and I give a user permission to the site, SP does not automatlcly give the user limited permission to the parent. If I try to add the user to the parent with limited permission the Limited option is not displayed in the list of permission levels but it is displayed for other sites. This is the same for sub-sites and lists. Thanks,PatMOSS 2007 SP2

Hi patdonnelly,The Limited Access permission level is designed to be combined with fine-grained permissions to give users access to a specific list, document library, item, or document, without giving them access to the entire site. However, to access a list or library, for example, a user must have permission to open the parent Web site and read shared data such as the theme and navigation bars of the Web site. The Limited Access permission level cannot be customized or deleted. So, You cannot assign this permission level to users or SharePoint groups. Instead, Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 automatically assigns this permission level to users and SharePoint groups when you grant them access to an object on your site that requires that they have access to a higher level object on which they do not have permissionsfor more details, could you please fadwa read the following articleshttp://office.microsoft.com/en-us/help/HA101001491033.aspxhttp://msmvps.com/blogs/laflour/archive/2009/03/29/sharepoint-tip-28-do-you-know-that-limited-access-permission-used-to-traverse-access-to-items.aspxBest Regrads, Ahmed Madany

Ahmed,I have already seen you canned reply on another post. As I stated the SP is not creating the automatically assigning the permission to the higher level object.Pat

Might be easier for us to start with the technical issues first. If we can resolve that we may be able to see why the users arent showing up with limited permissions.Have you verified that the users have the correct permissions on the site they need? Also, do they have the ability to access what they need on the parent site? If both of these cases are true, then I am not sure I understand the problem we are looking to resolve? ~Jennifer Mason ~My Blog~ ~SharePoint Support~ ~SharePoint Training~ ~Follow me on Twitter!~

The parent site has 3 groups and the user is not included. The sub-site have it's own 3 groups. When I add a user directly (not in a group) to the sub-site the limited permissions are not created on the parent. Further when I created the sub-site the limited permissions were not created on the parent for the sub-sites groups. The new users and the sub-sites group members can not access anything.Pat

Ok, let me try to recap the scenario to see if I am following correctly:1. You created a parent site.2. You created a child site.3. You have a group of users that need access to the child but not to the parent. You broke inheritance from the parent and create a new group to assign the permissions to the child site.4. The group of users that was added to the child site is not able to access the child site?If this is correct, then the first thing we need to resolve is thier access to the child site. If we get that working, I have a feeling it will then show up as limited in the parent site. Can you give us more information on the permissions you want on the child site and walk us through the process you used to grant the permissions? If I misunderstood, please correct me. ~Jennifer Mason ~My Blog~ ~SharePoint Support~ ~SharePoint Training~ ~Follow me on Twitter!~

Pat et al, We recently (within the last two weeks) have experienced a similar issue with "Limited Permissions" not working. We have a department using workflows that have specific access to a Shared Document Library within a subsite of our IT Site Collection. When we created the Shared Document Library for this work, it does NOT INHERIT PERMISSION from the Partent. As noted, this creates permission entries in the parent site with the users having "limted access"... so far so good. Unfortunately, those individuals with only specific access to the sub-sites, Shared Document Library... get "ACCESS DENIED" when trying to use the defined workflow for the documents selected within the library. If we grant "READ" permission for the user in the parent site, then the workflow works fine and the user's defined permissions for the subsite Shared Document Library are actively used. This is an error. This worked well in January 2010 but not now. We are also using MOSS2007 SP2. Note we recently upgraded our MS Office to 2007 in February 2010... is this related or coincidence? Is anyone else having this same issue? Our work around for now is to grant read access to the parent sites, but this is counter to the intention of the limited access use within SharePoint. thanks,

I have a similar issue. the permissions on my child sites work fine with a direct link to them, but I cannot browse through the parent sites/folders to get there. It was working, but hasn't for a while now. Have you found any solutions as of yet? Thank you, Stephen
