Licensing Details
Hi, We have a SharePoint farm and we have nearly a 1000 users accesing the website internally in the office. We have the sharepoint cal already taken . Now my question is " Is it required to take the SQL cal also for all the users that are accessing the website as none of the users are connecting directly to the SQL rather they connect to the sharepoint webservers and then the webservers connect to the SQL database". So please suggest what needs to be done. Thanks in Advance

This is an interesting twist on the usual question which is "do we need a MOSS 2007 CAL when the data we are accessing is all stored in the server running (only) SQL Server. The answer to that question was that you still need MOSS 2007 CALs because MOSS 2007 was needed in order to create the data (and databases) in the first place (and that also you are typically using MOSS 2007 to access it) In your question the answer is no doubt the same. The fact is that you are using SQL Server to store information. You therefore need SQL Server CALs. The fact that you are accessing the data via SharePoint is irrelevant from the (SQL Server) licensing point of view. Note: As usual all licensing replies ought to be confirmed with a Microsoft licensing specialist. (Here I'm 99.99% sure the answer given is the right one) SP 2010 "FAQ" (mainly useful links): http://wssv4faq.mindsharp.com/default.aspx WSS3/MOSS FAQ (FAQ and Links) http://wssv3faq.mindsharp.com/default.aspx Both also have links to extensive book lists and to (free) on-line chapters
