Licensing: Does the SCOM DB and DW servers need a SCOM Enterprise Management License?
Does the SCOM DB and DW servers need an Enterprise Management License if we are monitoring the SCOM SQL Server?

Hi Ray
Yes - because you'd be monitoring SQL.
Cheers

Thanks bud.. do you know if there is anything written in a Microsoft doc about this? I've been trying to locate something but there is no official doc and my customer is kind of particular about it.

My understanding is that it just falls under the normal licensing - if they want to monitor SQL then they need an EML.
http://www.microsoft.com/systemcenter/en/us/operations-manager/om-pricing-licensing.aspx#Lic
" An Enterprise Server ML is required for full application and server management, and a
Standard Server ML can be used for operating system and basic workload management. "
They might have some wriggle room if they have purchased a "Management Server with SQL" license and if SQL is on the same box as the RMS (as the RMS would effectively be monitoring SQL).
If they really believe they don't need an EML then I'd probably suggest trying to get something in writing from their Account Manager at MSFT so that there are no problems later.
Good Luck!

i have the same understanding, problem is that no account manager in MSFT is willing to put this in writing... and i can't seem to find anyone in Corp which will respond to this question :) Lets see if someone replies to this thread :)Ray Chou | MVP SCOM | http://mymomexperience.blogspot.com

Yep, getting things in writing is difficult but I think this is about as straight forward a licensing question as we can get. They want to monitor a SQL Server so they need an EML. If they have the RMS on the SQL box then the agent functionality of the RMS
"might" cover them ... but if it is a SQL box with no other OpsMgr components on it then licensing is clear - to monitor an application requires an EML.

If you want more detailed information, look at the licensing brief that can be downloaded from:

Hi,
I think that Graham is right, " An Enterprise Server ML is required for full application and server management". when installing the SQL on RMS or MS then we are allready monitoring SCOM as an application, and this is done by default. So we don't need Lics
for monitoring SQL.
take a closer look at
http://www.microsoft.com/systemcenter/en/us/operations-manager/om-pricing-licensing.aspx .
System Center Operations Manager 2007 R2 Pricing

Hey Kobi,
It was a grt post.
Still this SCOM licensing stuff looks like never ending.. I think the whole SCOM R2 is still Beta.. Lol..
Jokes apart,
I found one SQL query to get the agent license details. When I ran that query, got more confused. We installed SCOM DB on a failover cluster, now my 2 DB cluster nodes are using both Clinet Lic and Standard Lic too.. (No Enterprise Lic.) These licences were
assigned by default.
Some agents are using enterprise ML which is really not needed. Is there any way, I can control which lic should be used by which agent? I cannot find such option in SCOM console.
below is the sql query i used to get the lic details. Same query is used by MS lic reporting. (I dnt have a reporting services installed yet for one of my client env. ;) )
USE OperationsManager
select BME.DisplayName,
ClientLicense = case
when exists (select 1 from mt_managedcomputerclient C where
BME.BaseManagedEntityId = C.BaseManagedEntityId) then '*'
else ''
end,
StandardLicence = case
when exists (select 1 from dbo.MT_Standard S join BaseManagedEntity B on
S.BaseManagedEntityId = B.BaseManagedEntityId where B.TopLevelHostEntityId =
BME.BaseManagedEntityId) then '*'
else ''
end,
EnterpriseLicence = case
when exists (select 1 from dbo.MT_Enterprise E join BaseManagedEntity B on
E.BaseManagedEntityId = B.BaseManagedEntityId where B.TopLevelHostEntityId =
BME.BaseManagedEntityId) then '*'
else ''
end,
OS.*
from dbo.BaseManagedEntity BME
left outer join (
dbo.MTV_OperatingSystem OS
join dbo.BaseManagedEntity BME2 on OS.BaseManagedEntityId =
BME2.BaseManagedEntityId
) on BME2.TopLevelHostEntityId = BME.BaseManagedEntityId
where BME.BaseManagedTypeId = 'EA99500D-8D52-FC52-B5A5-10DCD1E9D2BD'

Problem is that the license report isn't accurate:

Hi,
Sorry for the late response.
I had the same problem on customer site. SCOM unlike other monitoring solutions start monitoring application
just after discovery is done.
Let’s take for example IIS which requires ENT LIC. you think that the server DO not need ENT LIC but it
appears that someone installed IIS on that server, SCOM automatically start monitor IIS.
In these cases i created a static group of computers (Standard Lics) and created overrides for every discovery
that uses ENT Lics. (I didn’t find any other easy way.)

How can I active a SCOM server license? Currently I have installed a trial version in my server with time expired, on the other hand I have bought a full license for this server. Is necesary to re install SCOM or there is a way to activate my new
licensing. Thanks for your information...
