License for custom Document Information Panel Template ?
We use Microsoft Office Sharepoint Server 2007. We would like to add a custom Document Information Panel Template, customized by ourselves. When a client uses that template, does he or she need a Enterprise CAL or is it enough with a Standard CAL?

Licensing is simple. If you have the Enterprise Edition of MOSS 2007 then ALL your users who access that MOSS 2007 system need to have Standard and Enterprise CALs. This is irrespective of whether the functions they use are in Standard Edition or are only in Enterprise Edition. ----------------------------- There is one way to modify this. If you can persuade your local Microsoft office that it is 100% impossible for a group of your users to be able to access any Enterprise functionality (and this will be very difficult without coding on your part to make such accesses 100% impossible) then the local Microsoft office may allow you to pay for Enterprise CALs (and Std CALs) for only a sub-section of the total numbers of users you have. The rest would then need only Standard licenses and could of course *never* access *any* function that is only in the Enterprise edition. You should get such permission *in writing* (to be sure) before you do not buy Std+Enterprise licenses for any user as otherwise you will be in breach of licensing regulations. -------------------------------- Given the above two sections, if the Document Information Panel is only available in the Enterprise edition (and I don't know off-hand) then even if you have such a written agreement of your local MS office, all of your users you use your customized version of the Doc Info Panel (i.e. Enterprise edition functionality) will still require both Std and Enterprise licenses for them. This is because in that case the original software would have only been available to holders of Std+Enterprise licenses and thus a modified version of the code still is under those restrictions. As always statements on licensing should be checked with a Microsoft *licensing specialist*.
