Leveraging SCOM 2007 R2
Hi Experts, I need clarification on the below two scenarios, * In our environment, we got SCOM 2007 R2 already which is used for SQL monitoring(156 servers), Now we got a requirement to extend the SCOM support to AD & Exchange. Just want to confirm if there will be any limitation in licence for adding agents. * We have got SCOM 2007 R2 already in our environment which is taken care by SQL team. Now we need to monitor AD & Exchange separately by different team, is there a way that we can use the same software (IF not from Program files of RMS) to install another management server(Is there any restriction in licence)Regards, Pratap

Hi, You can install both AD and Exchange, no limit or licens. AD MP here: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=21357 Due to a serious issue you can't at the moment download the Exhange MP: http://thoughtsonopsmgr.blogspot.dk/2012/06/exchange-2010-mp-version-143382-issue.html You don't have to install a management server to give other people access. * Hope this Exchange MP issue is with SCOM 2012. * Yeah i understood that there is a role based security option (Lets forget about role based option), but in my organization a team wants to maintain a set of servers in they own boundary. So i need to know is that ok if i install Management server using same Management Grp name or any licence issue will raise,.Regards, Pratap

Hi * Hope this Exchange MP issue is with SCOM 2012. Management Packs are not version specific (with the exception of network device monitoring and Avicode \ APM). The standard Microsoft management packs are the same for SCOM 2007 R2 and SCOM 2012 So i need to know is that ok if i install Management server using same Management Grp name or any licence issue will raise,. There is no need for a management server to scope security. Management Server licenses are expensive. Can you define what you mean by boundary. If it is a seperate AD Forest and there is no forest level trust then you will need a gateway server (licensed as a management server) and a PKI infratrsucture to set up certificates. If this is just an administrative boundary within the same AD Forest then no Management Server is required. You can just deploy a Management Server - you don't add license keys as part of the install. Who do you usually buy licenses from? Just contact them - most companies work through a LAR (license reseller). The bigger question is - why do you want to add a Management Server? You don't add a management server just because you want a different team for AD and SQL monitoring. For that you use security roles as per Dktoas response. http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb735424 Regards Graham New System Center 2012 Blog! - http://www.systemcentersolutions.co.uk View OpsMgr tips and tricks at http://systemcentersolutions.wordpress.com/

AGree with dktoa and Graham on this. There is no need to deploy additional management servers, as long as that box isnt maxed out in its resources. Rights, who can see which views or machines in SCOM is role based access. you can make custom operator roles for these so they only see their own stuff. Same for subscriptions to alerts and all that. And like Graham said, when installing a box there is no questipon for a license key. Its a paper/administrative thing which the company takes care of with where they buy licenses.Bob Cornelissen - BICTT (My Blog about SCOM) - MVP 2012 and Microsoft Community Contributor 2011 Recipient

Hi, If you still have concerns about licensing, you can call 1-800-426-9400 (select option 4), Monday through Friday, 6:00 A.M. to 5:30 P.M. (PST) to speak directly to a Microsoft licensing specialist. You can also visit Microsoft Volume Licensing Site http://www.microsoft.com/licensing/ to find the contact information. Hope this helps.
