Law Firm Application
I'mlooking at using Sharepoint as a practice management solution in my law firm. Before I make a significant investment it this, I need to understand whether I can "tie" or "link" information related to cases(projects), people (contacts and team members), communication (phone and email),documents, and calendars, together. Can someone provide me with some direction in this regard?TIA, Pat

Pat, don't treat this answer as definitive, as I'm sure there are ways to handle this purely from SharePoint. We're a software / solutions development house and we generate a fair amount of documentation that are linked to project plans, customers, meetings and so forth. We use a combination of Microsoft Dynamics CRM and SharePoint 2007 Enterprise to track all of this. CRM mainly for the Customer / Lead information with SharePoint as the document repository. We've written bits of glue to automatically create project folders in SharePoint when a new account is opened in CRM and have added document folder views from SharePoint directly into CRM. We also use Outlook to track calendar (timesheet) entries against projects / accounts and so forth. I find this integrated solution between the two products works very well and plays off the strengths of the entire suite of products. Of course, I also think you can do it all with SharePoint. There might even be an existing template for it already.

Hey Pat, in a nutshell, yes you can. Establishing all of those areas as Content (and even going so far as to create custom Content Types to map to you Projects, People, Communication, etc) and then associating it will allow you to do all of that. Establishing this foundation of content, called Information Architecture, is key in any collaborative solution.
