LOG Files Storage Suggestions
Hi, I am just wondering if there is some one who can guide me through the LOgs Files Storage. Here is my senario - I reviewed logs last week on both servers and deleted anything older than 4/1 and we still have roughly 8 GB of logs I would like to do 2 things to strategically manage the logs. First there should be an automated script to archive or delete old logs. Second I would like to move the logs to the D volume where there is more space. My concern with moving and deleting logs is I don’t know how this will impact SharePoint usage statistics. SharePoint reads the IIS logs to build its usage statistics data. If we move the logs, we need to make sure SharePoint can find them. Also, we need to understand how much historical data SharePoint needs to manage usage statistics (i.e. 30 days?). ANY recommendations of this ?? Thanks in Advance

Create a "Logs" folder on D drive on all the web front end server. Go to your central administration server web site, and open up the Diagnostic logging : Central Administration -> Operations -> Logging and Reporting -> Diagnostic logging Go to section : Trace Log: By Default, logs are sent to: C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\12\LOGS\ Change the directory to D:\Logs. this will change the log directory to the D drive. for archiving the logs you need to have some script to run on your server which will be scheduled to run at specific time to move files from log folder to the archive folder. There is no impact on SharePoint usage By changing the location of logs file. SharePoint Manage the 30 days usage statistics by deafult. I dont think sharepoint use iis logs to build its usage statstics, but thats my concern. i think it builds usage based on its information stored somewhere in ssp database. Hope this helps.
