Just installed Sharepoint, and it's down already....

Ok, so I'm new to the whole server world, and especially the sharepoint world....but I have this sharepoint server, that I've been working with.

I just installed Sharepoint 2013 on a virtual server, and it's a test deployment, so it's all on one machine, sql, sharepoint, everything. (even though I'm not entirely sure I know what that means...)

Anyways, about a week ago, it's up and running a team site, but I wasn't sure what it did, so I invited users to the site, and that went well, my co-worker logged in and updated his about me.. profile, which is all we could really do....

So I downloaded a help desk template, and the procedure was to backup the server farm, which I did, then restore the template (it was a backup file to restore) to the site, and that's how you install it.  Well, I initially installed a team site, then I installed a help desk site collection, and a second help desk site collection.

I've been reading through material and etc. all night, trying to make ends meet, and it seems there is so much to learn, the main reason that I am posting is my central admin is down.  Why would it go down, and be non-accessible.??

Well, here's hoping I learn something new anyways, though this whole process is new (and exciting, except for the server going down...)

Alright, thanks in advance, to whomever will converse with this sharepoint newbie! (and don't worry I'll be reading and learning as much as possible in the meantime, so it's not like I'm just posting this up here, and hoping you'll fix my problem, I sincerely want to understand everything there is to know about this project from installation to troubleshooting).

Thanks again

Welcome to the Community!  Hopefully, one of us can help you resolve this issue.

When encountering such a problem, here are the troubleshooting steps I would take, listed below. Answers to these queries will help narrow the scope of the problem.

  1. How many web applications do you have?
  2. Are these other web applications also presenting problems connecting to them?
  3. What does the browser display when you try connecting to the web application hosting the CA site (eg, HTTP 500, 404, etc)?
  4. Check the Application log on the server: what are the SharePoint errors that appear?
  5. Check IIS websites: is the web application hosting CA started?
  6. Check IIS application pools: is SharePoint Central Administration v4 started?
  7. Check IIS application pools: is SecurityTokenServiceApplicationPool started?
  8. If all web applications are down, check Services: is the WWW Publishing Service running?

Thanks Stephan,

#1 - I believe just one web application, the sharepoint server itself.  I initially installed a team site, and my co-worker and I were trying to figure out what I had done...I was able to share the site with all my co-workers, so that was a really cool feature, and if they logged into their windows computer and tried to log in, it worked.

#2 - as far as I know...no.

#3 This page can't be displayed.

#4 I will go through the diagnostic logs in sharepoint and see if I can export them to a spreadsheet, I found a technet page on how to perform this with powershell.

#5 - When I enter the IIS Manager, I can see ASP.NET v4.0, ASP.NET v4.0 Classic, Classic .NET AppPool, and DefaultAppPool, and those are all started.  Default App Pool has 1 application, all the others have 0 on the far right column.

#6 & 7 - As far as I can tell, no...I am in the IIS Manager, I may not know my way around, but I cannot find any reference to those two items in the application pools.

#8 - Yes, WWW Publishing service is running.

After installing the initial team site, I was able to perform a backup using the sharepoint powershell module (which is cool), then I created two site collections, each time trying to restore this help desk template over one of those site collections, and each time I failed. Then the site stopped responding, and it's been down ever since. I have since tried to uninstall, remove, re-install, but am not getting anywhere. (the uninstall, remove, etc. yield an office component not running failure).

Worst case scenario, I will have my other co-worker, reset the virtual server, but this would be the second time, and I hesitate to do that, because I want to learn something about this sharepoint server, and how it works.  I very much appreciate your time and attention, and look forward to our future conversation. Thanks so much.

I just found the application diagnostics 'report' and it's huge, plus I've been looking at some of the entries...and the sharepoint http is from our last install, so the diagnostics log was not reset...?? Just a guess.

There are so many entries, and I keep hitting the <END> key to jump to the end, but it's so slow I don't want it to overload the application or crash the system, since my only access to it is by remote desktop....so I stopped it.

Oh well, this is just FYI

The system wouldn't let me post an image, to show you the screen shot, so I typed out the error window:

One or more configuration settings failed.  Completed configuration settings will not be rolled back.   Resolve the problem and run this configuration wizard again.  The following contains detailed information about the failure:

I am at a loss, so I will continue to browse and learn info about sharepoint and servers in general, SQL server permissions might have something to do with it, so I will try to fix that?  At any rate, I will be changing shifts in a few days, and next Sunday I will be working with the co-worker that can probably help me fix this, or start over from scratch, only this time I will learn how to start everything from scratch...so that should be good.

Thanks everyone, and if you can offer me some advice on this, I would appreciate it greatly!

Check the services by going to the Services control panel (not Services on Server in Central Admin).  Verify that all the usual SharePoint services are started. Particularly, verify that the SharePoint Timer service is started.
November 30th, 2014 12:04pm

Hi Jeff,

According to your description, my understanding is that the Central Administration was down and you got an error when running Configuration Wizards in SharePoint 2013.

Please add the key and DWORDs as instructed, and re-run the SharePoint configuration wizard.

The paths on which the key must be set are as follows:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office Server\version\LauncherSettings
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office Server\version\LoadBalancerSettings

More information, please refer to the links:

All the sharepoint services with sharepoint in the name are running except the Sharepoint search host controller, which is disabled.  I tried enabling that the other day, and it did nothing as far as I can tell.

Timer service is running.

December 1st, 2014 3:23am

The sharepoint configuration wizard when I run it now, gets to step 7 (provisioning the sharepoint central admin) and fails because of unable to create sample data.
