Joining users to multiple groups from database tables
Hi, I've just begun experimenting with FIM for an intake of students about to start in around a week, from an SQL database. I have three database tables: STUDENT DIST_GROUPS STUDENT_DIST_GROUPS STUDENT contains all my student identites, so I have set up an MA to provision these into FIM and AD. DIST_GROUPS contains a list of all distribution groups (basically one for each course). I have set up a second MA and provisioned these as distribution groups into FIM and AD. STUDENT_DIST_GROUPS contains a table listing Student IDs and the distribution group(s) that student needs to be joined to. Note that a student may need to be a member of more than one group. This is where I've hit a problem. Do I need a third MA and to configure some join rules so that I, for instance, match the distribution group name and update its member attribute? Also how would it resolve the DN of the student? Many thanks, Paul.

Paul, I think you should take a look at this, http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc708679(WS.10).aspx. This shows how to use DB MA such as SQL to sync groups using multi-value tables in MIIS 2003 but this applies also to ILM and FIM 2010 sync engine.

Just to add on to Glenn, you should also take a look at Synchronizing SQL Server Objects to Active Directory. While this is also primarily related to MIIS/ILM 2007, the gist of it still applies to FIM. Cheers, Markus Markus Vilcinskas, Knowledge Engineer, Microsoft Corporation
