Issues with Excel/Sharepoint Integration (unable to insert new data rows)
When I export data from a custom list to Excel, I receive the following notification:"This list is linked to a SharePoint document library. You may edit existing document rows, but you may not add or insert records, or commit changes to folder information."The problem is that it is not linked to a SharePoint document library; it's linked to a custom list. I've researched extensively to see if anyone else has encountered this problem, but have had no luck to date. This is a relatively new problem that appeared when I attempted to fix another relatively new problem. I was having the issue mentioned in "Modification of data in Excel file (SP3) in Share point (WSS)" (unable to edit data because the column was read-only). I applied hotfix mentioned (952608), which fixed the unable to edit data problem (I can edit data that is already there), but created the new problem of not being able to insert new rows of data.I am running Excel 2003 SP3 and SharePoint Services 3.0. Anyone have any ideas?

Hi,I've got exactly the same problem as you. I use to have the read only issue then install the hotfix and now I can't add new rows and also some of cells which were under multiple lines of text are not recognised when I try to do synchronise.Really frustrating. Have you found a solution?

I too have just installed hotfix KB952608:STLIST and now cannot add new records. No solutions found with many searches. Uninstalled the hotfix and got the add record star back, but then all is read-only. Back with the hotfix, can edit but cannot add records again.Thank-you for any info...

I'm having the same problem, has anyone found a workaround? This worked fine in WSS 2.0 but for some reason no longer works in WSS 3.0.

I dont know if this helps but have you tried to unlink the excel from the list. (Data > List > Unlink List) The error might be due to the reason that the view that is exported to the spreadsheet does not contain certain columns which are mandatory and do not have default value set. In this case, Sharepoint would be trying to keep the excel and the list in sync, till the point you break the connection and continue.

I am having the same problem. Any found a work around?

That works but doesn't help since the idea is to be able to edit and add rows while the list is connected to SharePoint. Right now it looks like you can only edit, not add. Does anyone know if this is a reported bug?

I have exactly the same issue. But it used to work for me. I did an update on 1/5/2009 and it started after that. I am trying to determine which update broke it. If anyone knows, please let us know! Thanks-rushui

Idiscovered a workaround. Instead of using "Actions" and then "Export to Spreadsheet" to download a worksheet go to "Actions" and then "Task Pane". From the menuthat appears on the right choose "Export and Link to Excel". For me the first method results in the error described above, and the second method results in no errorand a writeable worksheet with the* row at the bottom. Server isusing SharePoint Server 2007, client is using WindowsXP SP2,Excel 2003 SP3. BTW, there was a word missing from the error message in the original post so adding again here to helppeople find this thread:"This list is linked to a SharePoint document library. You may edit existing document rows, but you may not add or insert additional records, or commit changes to folder information."Steve

We are facing exactly the same issue withMOSS 2007 and office 2003 std SP3. Note that It was working just fine before installing office 2003 SP3. Now all the list that are linked to another one (even with a simple lookup field to site collection's users) are impacted. 'psinfo -s | findstr -i KB952608' does not return anything so I don't if it is embeded in sp3 or just not installed. Thanks to Steve for the workaroundhe provided here. This is a very good alternative for us anyway if someone heard something from MS I'll be interested.- Michael.

I discovered a workaround. This solution seemed to work for me, but I do not know whether applying the hotfix might have played into the fix as well.-- Preston.

Also getting the same error message - but no option for Task Pane so the workaround isn't available for me. Could it be that someone has removed the task pane functionality, or does it need to be switched on somewhere?

Dunxd, you need to be in the Datasheet View (Actions - Edit in Datasheet). Then you can make the Task Pane visible (click on the grey bar on the right of the datasheet). By the way, we recently installed Service Pack 2 for SharePoint and this seems to fix the issue. Best regards, Jan.

Anybody got any solution till now? I am also having same problem. Does anybody tried by uninstalling Office 2003 and Installing it again? Thanks in Advance.

Thanks Steve for a very workable solution. Also to Jan Van for clarifying how to access the Task Pane area from the Edit in Datasheet view. Works exactly how you would expect it to. Just remember to click the synchronize button in excel to have your changes reflected in Sharepoint.

Choosing Actions | Task Pane | Export and link to Excel is the only 'workaround' that I have found works in this case. If the user does not have that option, perhaps you need to create the Excel workbook for her or him and provide instructions to use the workbook when a network connection is present. Hi all, We recently upgraded from sps 2003 to MOSS 2007 sp2. We are facing the same problem with excel 2003 sp3. Earliet when we exported a custom list to spreadsheet it gave error for 'Read Only Columns. Wen we applied the hotfix 952608 we are getting the error as' this list is linked to a sharepoint document library. Yoy may edit rows but can not add rows.' The workaround of taskpane is also not available to user as in that machine the edit in datasheet view is also not available. Can somebody pl help. Regards
