Issues running updates in a task sequence

Hi, I am trying to run a build and capture task sequence that includes running all mandatory updates.  I keep getting a "0x00000032" error message when it attempts to apply the updates and the task sequence fails.

If I disable the update step in the task sequence it runs fine.

Any ideas why this doesn't work?

Disregard..

I needed to update which boot image the task sequence was using as I had to rebuild the boot image to accomodate SSL communication.  I also had the task sequence booting to WinPE before applying the updates.

Especially your last note is the one that solves this issue. If you had looked at the SMSTS.log it would have shown you the message that the step has to run in the full OS.

Ok, it looks like I got a step closer, but it's still not working correctly.

Here is my task sequence.  I added a step after "Setup Windows and Configuration" that scans for updates.  I do not use unknown computers, I import a single computer, then added it to the appropriate collections that have our mandatory updates deployed.

So I'm hoping that this task sequence will scan to see which updates it's missing, then install them.  I also read that you need multiple software update steps.  At the restart steps it is booting back into the default OS.

Any ideas what I'm doing wrong here?

The first time the Install Software Updates will trigger a scan itself. After that it will use the same results again. That means you need to trigger the scan cycle before every other Install Software Updates step. Also, you might want to put some time (a sleep) between a scan and the install of software updates.

Odd, it's still not installing any updates.  I've got a windows 7 workstation collection with all of the required updates deployed, then have imported a new workstation and dropped it into that collection, I then select "Mandatory Software Updates" in each of the "Install Software Updates" steps. After I image the reference workstation if I log in and check the installed updates there aren't any.

Could there be anything else I'm missing?  When the task sequence is running it sits at the "Install Software Updates" for quite a while, it looks like it's doing something, but doesn't appear to be.

Thanks again!

Anyone have any ideas?  This is sooooo frustrating, I've been working on this for a long time.

Do I HAVE to use unknown computers to deploy these updates?  I don't use unknown computers to image machines, I manually import them then deploy updates to that collection, is that ok?  Anything else I could be doing wrong?  I don't even think the scan is completing, it just sits at the "Install Software Updates" step, then errors.

Thanks,

Travis
