Issues installing software in OSD
Hi, I have an issue with installing Windows Desktop Search: Add in for Files 1.0.2.0 English as part of a task sequence.
Installation failed with error (0x80070641)
The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed. This can occur if the Windows Installer is not correctly installed. Contact your support personnel for assistance. (Error: 80070641; Source: Windows)
Any ideas ?

Hi, at which place is Windows Desktop Search placed in you Task Sequence? Is it placed after "Setup windows and ConfigMgr" step, so in Windows mode?
This post has the same error message, but it's not using SCCM:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315346
It mentions: This problem may occur if one of the following conditions is true:
The Windows Installer files that are on your hard disk are damaged or are missing.
You install or remove a program that uses the Windows Installer Microsoft Software Installation (MSI) package file (.msi). For example, this may occur when you try to install Microsoft Office on your computer.

Hi, it is after the "Setup windows and configmgr" step. Something weird is happening.. it seems half way through the install of the paqckage it just reboots without warning, need to check the logs again, maybe package is corrupted or something, thanks
for the help.

Hi, indeed try to use a new package and new source files. Probably that will solve the issue.

Windows 7 .. on further inspection looks like WMI service is stopped after an install.. will disable that one software install to see if its that causing the issue.

As I know usually MSI installation failure with error (0x80070641) can be fixed by unregister then reregister windows installer.
msiexec /Unregister
msiexec /regserver
Thanks
