Issues after moving Central Administration
Hi Everyone, I moved my Central Administration site from an old server to a new server in the farm. However, after the move. The Central Admin links in the start menu still point to the old server (and do not work since the site was moved). Also, on the new server I can only access Central Admin by browsing to http://localhost:17240 not http://newservername:17240. I also noticed that my alternate access mappings collection includes entries for http://oldservername:17240 and http://newservername:17240. Any ideas on correcting this issue are greatly appreciated. Thank you! DP

Hi, 'This is due to manuallystarting the service. The correct method is to unprovision then provision using psconfig. psconfig.exe -cmd adminvs –unprovision Unprovisions the SharePoint Central Administration Web application from this server. Unprovisioning removes the SharePoint Central Administration Web application and its application pool. psconfig.exe -cmd adminvs -provision -port 8080 -windowsauthprovider onlyusentlm Provisions the SharePoint Central Administration Web application on this server. Provisioning creates a new SharePoint Central Administration Web application and an application pool running under the server farm administrator's account. Thank you for the reply. So I should unprovision from both servers and the provision on the new server? DP

I believe stopping the Service through the GUI, removes the service completly. However, I havent tested and it may not remove all of the information from the Config_Db, running psconfig -unprovision on both servers will not hurt the environment. I would unprovision on both servers prior to provisioning CA on the new server.. -IvanIvan Sanders My LinkedIn Profile, My Blog, @iasanders.

Thank you. I tried the GUI approach before (provisioned on new - realized that didn't work, then unprovisioned old, and provisioned new). I'll try the PSCONFIG.exe approach. DP

Your welcome, SharePoint is a Community. PSConfig is the way to ensure the CA is provisioned properly.. -IvanIvan Sanders My LinkedIn Profile, My Blog, @iasanders.
