Is there a way to get SharePoint Search to return matches where the item I am looking for BEGINS WITH a value?

Hi, I am an Analyst working in a SME in the UK.

We have an in-house developed web application that utilises SharePoint to provide an enterprise search function.

My customers typically enter a string or string with wildcards into a search bar and the search results show matches where the string features anywhere in the result set.

Some of my customers want a slightly different experience. They want to only return results where the string entered matches the leading part of the search results, a sort of BEGINS WITH if you will.

My developers tell me this hard to do or not how SharePoint works - is this true? is there any guidance out there on how to make this kind of thing work please?

Sololite

Hi Sololite,

As your description, you want search to only return the results where the string matches the leading part of the search results.

Yes, your developers are right. By default, SharePoint search query all matched keywords wherever the keywords are in the search result, it returns all results what contain the keyword. It is very hard to do via development to only return the results where the string matches the leading part of the search results.

Thanks,

Wendy
