While making configuration changes in the portal, I encountered "Unable to process your request" errors occassionally, especially in the "popup" windows (activeX controls?).. It happened after I hadn't clicked a button for a while, so I tested the timing and it's reproducible and happens after 60 seconds of "inactivity" (typing in text boxes, etc, doesn't count and is considered inactivity). I figured maybe it was based on the timeoutInMilliseconds attribute on the <resourceManagementClient> line in the inetpub\wwwroot\wss\VirtualDirectories\80\web.config file. I changed it from 60000 to 300000 but it still errored after 60 seconds. Can this behavior/timeout be changed? And is this by design?

FYI, I needed to do an iisreset after changing the lines, otherwise I'd get "The object reference is not set to an instance of an object" error (on any page). Anyway, even after making all three of those changes (for the 3rd one I tried commenting out as well as temporarily deleting the line).. I still get "Unable to process your request" after 60 seconds.. no detailed ASP error stack trace. I've tried implementing all of the items in Darryl Russi's blog post: http://blogs.msdn.com/darrylru/archive/2010/02/02/extending-fim-timeouts.aspx ...and still get timeouts after 60 seconds. (again, e.g. in the popups for creating new sets, etc.. waiting 60 secs before clicking Next)

Tim - Did you drop the ILMError module from the web.config ? (commenting it out is better, but removing would show you the stack as well)Once ilmerror is removed or commented out, with callstack=true and customerrors=off, you should be able to see the traces.I take it you have already extended the ASP.NET timeout... is there any chance you are editing a different config file accidentally? e.g. a backup, or a different deployment. Try deleting everything on the web.config and save it (for a second)... if the portal still comes up, you might be editing a different file.

This same behaviour can be seen on a FIM portal installation we have made on several environments. However even after all the tips and advice from this thread I've been unable to solve this issue. So main question; did anyone figure out what was causing this issue? The error page (the same as posted by Tim Miller on Thursday, April 15, 2010 6:20 PM in this thread) shows up almost instantly. It really seems to be a 60 second timeout on the popup which I can't seem to figure out where/how to change...
