Is it possible to prevent users mapping a SharePoint site to a network drive?
Morning,I know that this isn't entirely a SharePoint question, but I thought I'd throw it to the floor to cover all angles. In short, I'm wondering if its possible to prevent a user (with contribute level permissions) from mapping SharePoint (site, library, etc.) to a network drive. The reason I'd be looking to do this is to ensure that a new document management structure that has been setup on a team site isn't bypassed by members simply mapping a drive and dragging bulk documents into it.Suggestions and comments welcomehttp://www.final-exodus.net

Hi there,As I understand it, the ability to map a network drive to a SharePoint folder is based upon the user’s permission settings. If the user has permission to view a particular list or library, they will also have permission to map a network drive to it.If you want to prevent this ability, you would need to modify the user’s permissions. If you deny them access to the particular list or library entirely, they cannot map the network drive. If they were to try, they would be asked for login credentials and, based on their permission settings, would be denied. If you need to make this modification to multiple users, you can assign them to a group and change the entire group’s permissions. The only other way to stop a user mapping a drive is to manipulate permissions on local files. If you set No Access permission, for a user, on %systemroot%\system32\mprui.dll, even OutLook users can't map a drive. And, if you set No Access permission on NET1.EXE, you can further inhibit them. They won't be abe to use the NET command (which means you can't map in a logon script)Hope this helpsGeoff

I also think you disable this feature at the werb app level. If that's not crippling, it may be the way to go.--Paul Galvin, Computer Generated Solutions (CGS) Microsoft MVP - SharePoint Blogging @ http://feeds.feedburner.com/PaulGalvinsSharePointSpace Twitter @ http://www.twitter.com/pagalvin
