Is it possible to migrate reporting services without moving the DB?
I have reporting services running on a server along with the ReportServer DB. I wanted to install reporting services on an additional server however due to me having SQL Server 2008 R2 Standard, I can't. I would need SQL Server 2008 Enterprise to have a scale-out deployment. So my thoughts were to uninstall reporting services from the original server and install it on a different server then point it back to the original DB. I have been looking for some kind of migration documentation but from what I have found I need to move the DB with it which defeats the purpose of what I am trying to do. Has anyone done this? Right now upgrading to Enterprise isn't an option but might be in the future. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks, Jeff

Hi Jeffery, We can use a SQL Server 2008 Database Engine instance to host a new Report Server database that we create for a SQL Server 2008 R2 Reporting Services installation. There are some articles about configuring a Report Server Scale-Out deployment and creating a Report Server database, please see: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms159114.aspx http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms157300.aspx Thanks, Bin LongPlease remember to mark the replies as answers if they help and unmark them if they provide no help.

Thanks for the post, I can't have a Scale-Out deployment because I don't have SQL Enterprise. What I'm looking to do is gracefully remove Reporting Services from the SQL DB server and install Reporting Services elsewhere.

Hi Bin, I did not try this method but based on what I read I believe that it will work due to trial and error on how I was able to get it to work. I can confirm that even if you remove reportings services on the original box and install it on a new box to point back to the original DB it will in fact still recognize the original report server and act as a scale-out-deployment. So what I did was back up the reports I had locally, then delete the ReportServer DB on the original server, install reporting services on a remote server and recreated the database and finally upload the reports again. The method you posted would have saved me some time and steps. Thanks, Jeff
