Is it possible to boot 2nd generation Ubuntu from differencing disk?

With first generation all works fine and I was able to boot Ubuntu from differencing disk, but with second generation I got: Bool Failed. EFI SCSI Device.

Ubuntu is installed with UEFI (checked with this simple tests) boot and loads normally.

Secure boot in Frimware is turned off

Thank you

A differencing disk by itself is not bootable / mountable in any way.

The differencing disk plus its parent disk should be bootable - and there is no reason why it would not be.

The VM generation (1 vs 2) does not affect the virtual disk other than how the VM uses it when it installs its OS and sets its bootloader.

That said, you can't use the same virtual disk for both a generation 1 (bios boot) and a generation 2 (uefi boot) machine.

Hi Mac,

as of now, Microsoft is only supporting Windows 8+ and 2012+ as 2nd Gen VM.
Maybe with playing around you could get the Linux running, but I don't think that this is currently possible.

Best Regards,
Jens

Yep, it seems that you are right after trying all possible ways it seems to be impossible unfortunately.

So if you wish to create many VMs from base image using benefits of difference disks you stick on 1st gen and losing benefits of 2nd gen
