Is WSS required when installing on Win2008
Hi,I've only ever done Win2003 install of SharePoint 2003 but now need to do a 2008 install. Is there a requirement to install WSS 3.0 sp2 prior to the main SharePoint install or not? Also I've seen slipstreaming of the service packs for Win2008 R2 is this a requirement for Win2008 (R1)?Thanks for the help,MichaelWeb Developer MCTS SharePoint 2007 Developer

Michael, You can directly install MOSS 2007 with SP2 on Windows Server 2008 R2 If at all MOSS 2007 with SP2 is not available means you can create through slip stream For more information on how to create MOSS with SP2 (slip stream) have a look at the links Microsoft Sharepoint Team Blog: MOSS 2007 with SP1 (Slipstream) How to create a ‘Slipstream’ installation for MOSS with SP1Best Regards, G Vijai Kumar | My Sharepoint Blog

Hi,For Windows 2008 R2 onlySharePoint SP2 enables compatibility with Server 2008 R2, so first you've got to make a slipstream install -- then you can install without any problem. without any need for WSS SP2 as it is included.Keep in mind that if you have the combined x86/64 MOSS ISO, your updates folder will be in \x64\Updates or \x86\Updates.For the details, follow the technet article:http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc261890.aspxalso check this http://www.keirgordon.com/post/Prepare-Windows-Server-2008-for-SharePoint.aspxfor Windows 2008 R1check this http://blogs.msdn.com/sharepoint/archive/2008/01/16/windows-server-2008-and-sharepoint-resources.aspxBest Regards, Ammar MCT http://ahmed-ammar.blogspot.com Posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights.

Both answers seem to be inaccurate to me.WSS 3.0 can be installed on Win Server 2008 without needing to use the WSS 3.0 including SP2 version. (Although it is available so you can and shoulñd use it). It´s MOSS 2007 where you need to use the version including SP2 and thus slipstream. But if installing WSS 3.0 thereçs no need.FAQ sites: (SP 2010) http://wssv4faq.mindsharp.com; (v3) http://wssv3faq.mindsharp.com and (WSS 2.0) http://wssv2faq.mindsharp.com Complete Book Lists (incl. foreign language) on each site.
