Is OSD live logging doable with ConfigMgr?

Hello, I am a user of medium knowledge of MDT and we are just in earlier days of our SCCM pilot. Is it possible to do live logging with ConfigMgr for OSD as one could with MDT? I did find few blogs suggesting to user:

SLShare syntax in customsettings.ini

Using MDT Toolkit Files for Copy Logs step within the task sequence. I tried that but end result was a very short BDD.log with no useful info.

If someone can guide me in right direction it'll be appreciated. Thanks.

There is C:\Windows\CCM\Logs\SMSTS\smsts.log which moves around during deployment. You can monitor it with cmtrace (so you should import cmtrace.exe in your image). But this log offers so much details, that I dont think that this is something you want (or do you really want to monitor every line?).

Another approach is to use ConfMgr reporting for TS or create state message set for TS (http://www.toolzz.com/?p=1264)

Hi,

You should see more than a short bdd.log file when you use the SLShare setting, you should see alot more. You can also try using the SLShareDynamicLogging which will write the log files to that share "live" as well.. Really useful at least for troubleshooting and testing.

It's not recommended to use this for constant production use though unless you are only doing a small amount of deployments.

Thank you, greatly appreciated, will give this a shot.

Hi Jorgen, SLShareDynamicLogging is the syntax I used. I will verify once again. Is that all that is needed in customsettings.ini? I read someone's blog where they mentioned to point the CopyLogs TS Step and have it use the MDTSettings package.

Thank you Jason. Yes I mainly wanted to test this functionality and see if it is possible to generate live logs as I have been able to with MDT 2013 without ConfigMgr. Reporting in ConfigMgr is great but at the same time I am used to having live logging to see how the TaskSequence is progressing and how is OSD going, though I agree with your point. Thanks for the feedback.

The CopyLogs task is a one time copy of the logs so has nothing to do with anything real-time.

Are you worried about progress monitoring or log review? They really are two different things.

You can also use report to check the status of deployment.
