Introduction to Knowledge Bits
Have you ever been blocked in a project because a small piece of information was missing?
Have you ever spent countless hours on reading through numerous posts on a forum until you finally found this small piece of information?
Have you ever had the feeling that spending these countless hours on reading through numerous posts was a waste of your time?
What is a knowledge bit?
If you have answered all questions above with “yes”, you already know what a knowledge bit is.
Knowledge bits are important pieces of information that will significantly reduce the time you have to spend on searching for critical information.
A knowledge bit doesn’t contain conceptual information – the focus is just on providing the facts.
As a result of this, they are usually relatively short.
What is a knowledge bit collection?
A
knowledge bit collection is a catalog page that provides a list of the available knowledge bits.
Where do knowledge bits come from?
A knowledge bit can be a lesson you have learned in one of your projects or it can be something interesting you have found in a post on this forum.
How are knowledge bits developed?
Knowledge bit development is a community effort – which means, knowledge bits are developed by
YOU(!).
You can create a knowledge bit by creating a discussion post on this forum.
When you post a new knowledge bit, please make sure that you prefix the title with “Knowledge Bit:”
By adding the prefix, you can ensure that your knowledge bit will be added to the
catalog page.
How can I access knowledge bits?
Next to the
catalog page, knowledge bits are also included into the
FIM Community Knowledge Box.
How can I ask questions or other feedback regarding knowledge bits?
Hit Reply and let us know what your question is.
Happy knowledge bit posting!

Developing Knowledge Bit Posts
The simplest method to develop knowledge bits is to write the related HTML code offline by using a tool such as Expression Web.
You can use
this template as a starting point:
FIM Knowledge Bit
<Add your text here>
Go to the FIM Knowledge Bit Collection
You should keep the HTML of your knowledge bit as simple as possible.
The simpler - the better.
Copying and pasting from a Word document is not a good idea.
Note
You can find a collection of HTML templates
here.
Posting a Knowledge Bit
To post a Knowledge Bit, you need to define a title.
Your title should start with "Knowledge Bit:",
If you want to get an impression of how your actual post looks like on the forum, you can post to the staging site.

You can test your post by posting to
http://ctp.social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/ilm2/threads.
