Installing reporting services point on Windows Server 2008
Hi all Maybe this should be in a SQL reporting services forum, but I figure the Microsoft guys must have tested installing the reporting services role on Server 2008 64-bit, as it is a supported platform. I'm having trouble getting it working and wondering if anyone has some steps? My lab config is as follows: - Windows Server 2008 64 bit running as DC and with ConfigMgr R2 installed - SQL 2005 SP2 64 bit installed on same server - SQL 2005 Reporting Services SP2also on same server Trouble is I can't get the reporting services point working. I've done the following: 1. Followed steps in http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc512033.aspxexcept for email settings. - I changed the web service identity to run under classic .Net app pool as I saw in a few articles this is needed for Server 2008 2. Having done above I can't actually connect to the default reports folder. 3. No other steps including installing the ConfigMgr role help I think the root cause here is trying to get SQl reporting services working on Server 2008. I've found a few articles such as http://support.microsoft.com/kb/938245but still no luck. Anyone have advice?

Actually, we haven't announced support for R2 and SQL Server 2008 yet. The last I heard, there will be a hotfix required to support this combination. So as of today, we only support the R2 update with SQL Server 2005 SP2 :-(

@ Wally, it is on Windows Server 2008 not SQL Server 2008. Please take a look at the logfiles for more information regarding your issue. They are stored in %programfiles%\Microsoft SQL Server\<SQL Server Instance>\Reporting Services\LogFiles.

Correct, it is SQL 2005 SP2 running on Windows Server 2008. Jannes, do you have a similar config working? I'm assuming that the standard setup steps are not going to work. I see lots of workarounds for other apps in this config and all mainly due to IIS permissions that reporting services has issues with. Have tried lots of workarounds but nothing worked so far. Has someone in the product group tested this and has some steps we can follow? Errors in log files below. From ReportServerService_main, lots of errors same as below on a regular basis. It is saying invalid version but I have SQL 2005 SP2 applied. Think it may be red herring: ReportingServicesService!library!a!27/10/2008-17:23:07:: e ERROR: Throwing Microsoft.ReportingServices.Diagnostics.Utilities.InvalidReportServerDatabaseException: The version of the report server database is either in a format that is not valid, or it cannot be read. Hi, First make sure you configured IIS7 correctly for SCCM. Microsoft released an article special to configure IIS 7 for SCCM. Please take a look at it: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc431377.aspx

I've done all that. Everything is working fine except the reporting services point. I'd like to know if Microsoft have a procedure for this as it is a supported config, but the documented steps don't work in this config. They are based on installing it on Server 2003. I see workarounds for other products but no mention of how to do this for ConfigMgr.

I have the same setup:Server 2008 with SCCM 2007 R2 SQL Reporting Services with SP2 appliedI can go 1 step fruther and makehttp://localhost/reportsand see the SQL Server Reporting Services function properly. However, when I add the SRS SCCM role it does show successfull installation in the SRSRPSetup.log<01-07-2009 17:53:05> ====================================================================<01-07-2009 17:53:05> SMSSRSRP Setup Started....<01-07-2009 17:53:05> Parameters: E:\PROGRA~1\MICROS~1\bin\i386\ROLESE~1.EXE /install /siteserver:FS-SCCM SMSSRSRP<01-07-2009 17:53:05> Installing Pre Reqs for SMSSRSRP<01-07-2009 17:53:05> ======== Installing Pre Reqs for Role SMSSRSRP ========<01-07-2009 17:53:05> Found 0 Pre Reqs for Role SMSSRSRP <01-07-2009 17:53:05> ======== Completed Installion of Pre Reqs for Role SMSSRSRP ========<01-07-2009 17:53:05> Installing the SMSSRSRP<01-07-2009 17:53:05> Invoking process "C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\RegAsm.exe" "e:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Configuration Manager\bin\i386\SRSSERVER.dll"<01-07-2009 17:53:05> Registered DLL e:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Configuration Manager\bin\i386\SRSSERVER.dll<01-07-2009 17:53:05> Installation was successful. However in my SRSRP.log I get these errorsSMS_EXECUTIVE started SMS_SRS_REPORTING_POINT as thread ID 4388 (0x1124). $$<SMS_SRS_REPORTING_POINT><Wed Jan 07 17:19:02.203 2009 Central Standard Time><thread=2268 (0x8DC)>This is a SRS Reporting Point Role as SRSRP registry key exists.~ $$<SMS_SRS_REPORTING_POINT><Wed Jan 07 17:19:02.218 2009 Central Standard Time><thread=4388 (0x1124)>~Waiting for changes for 0 minutes $$<SMS_SRS_REPORTING_POINT><Wed Jan 07 17:19:02.218 2009 Central Standard Time><thread=4388 (0x1124)>Timed Out...~ $$<SMS_SRS_REPORTING_POINT><Wed Jan 07 17:19:02.218 2009 Central Standard Time><thread=4388 (0x1124)>STATMSG: ID=7405 SEV=E LEV=M SOURCE="SMS Server" COMP="SMS_SRS_REPORTING_POINT" SYS=FS-SCCM SITE=100 PID=2128 TID=4388 GMTDATE=Wed Jan 07 23:19:04.265 2009 ISTR0="ConfigMgr_100" ISTR1="FS-SCCM" ISTR2="" ISTR3="" ISTR4="" ISTR5="" ISTR6="" ISTR7="" ISTR8="" ISTR9="" NUMATTRS=0 $$<SMS_SRS_REPORTING_POINT><Wed Jan 07 17:19:04.265 2009 Central Standard Time><thread=4388 (0x1124)>Failures reported during periodic health check by the SRS Server FS-SCCM. Nosir, I'm on SQL 2005. But I tried that as well.I appologize thatI didn't mention that. Also I would like add to this....I am able to copy the reports to the reporting services from the reports area in SCCM. However when I run the report, I recieve the following area. I'm thinking this has to do with some kind of security rights issue that I've overlooked or something. This is my first time of installing SRS for SCCM R2. Any help is appreciated!Error I recieve: An error has occurred during report processing. (rsProcessingAborted) Cannot create a connection to data source '{5C6358F2-4BB6-4a1b-A16E-8D96795D8602}'. (rsErrorOpeningConnection) Login failed for user 'NT AUTHORITY\ANONYMOUS LOGON'.

I no longer receiving the error:STATMSG: ID=7405 SEV=E LEV=M SOURCE="SMS Server" COMP="SMS_SRS_REPORTING_POINT" SYS=FS-SCCM SITE=100 PID=2128 TID=4388 GMTDATE=Wed Jan 07 23:19:04.265 2009 ISTR0="ConfigMgr_100" ISTR1="FS-SCCM" ISTR2="" ISTR3="" ISTR4="" ISTR5="" ISTR6="" ISTR7="" ISTR8="" ISTR9="" NUMATTRS=0 $$<SMS_SRS_REPORTING_POINT><Wed Jan 07 17:19:04.265 2009 Central Standard Time><thread=4388 (0x1124)>to fix the above error, go into SCCM and go to Reporting --> Reporting Services --> <Server>, Right click and click on the wizard "Copy reports to reporting Services".The only error I'm having now is this:Error I recieve: An error has occurred during report processing. (rsProcessingAborted) Cannot create a connection to data source '{5C6358F2-4BB6-4a1b-A16E-8D96795D8602}'. (rsErrorOpeningConnection) Login failed for user 'NT AUTHORITY\ANONYMOUS LOGON'. I think it has something to do with the IIS7. But I'm not sure since I checked the setting and they show Windows Authentication enabled.

I wanted to add to this thread the exception on charts & 64bit OS for SCCM reporting. Review this article carefullyhttp://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb681030.aspx

Review this article carefullyhttp://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb681030.aspxThat's true for the "classic" reporting point, but that thread covers the Reporting Services point (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc431393.aspx).

Hi James,Did you resolve this issue? This looks like an issue wherein the data source may be configured with integrated windows authentication and your reporting server and the SCCM database might be on different servers. If this is still an open issue, can you let me know? Thanks,Bhaskar
February 12th, 2009 6:36pm

No, I had to give up on this issue. More problems went wrong and I had to rebuild the server from scratch. Very long story.I'll try this again on my personal time and see if I can get it to work properly.Thank you everyone for your support on this problem.

I just ran into the issue with the error: An error has occurred during report processing. (rsProcessingAborted) Cannot create a connection to data source '{5C6358F2-4BB6-4a1b-A16E-8D96795D8602}'. (rsErrorOpeningConnection) Login failed for user 'NT AUTHORITY\ANONYMOUS LOGON'. My setup is the reporting server, database server, and reporting services server are all on different servers withintegrated widows authentication. The looking I've done into this leads me to believe I need delegation on the objects. I am able to run reports if I use localhost when browsing the Reporting Services IIS site. So that seems to verify that I'm losing my creds with that hop between that servers, but I not very versed in that area.If anyone elsehas runinto this issue has delegation resolved it? What else did you do to resolve this issue? Thanks!Joe

JoeUMN - I am just ran across this thread in research so I am not sure it will answer your question but you may want to check out your data source configuration in rep server. go to localhost/reports. navigate to your report, show details and edit. you will have a data sources tab. that will tell you what data source you are using. navigate to that data source and check out how it is authenticating. good luck.

Hi Joe,You may run into various issues with configuring integrated windows authentication correctly across your environment. The following link should help you out with configuring the right settings but note that there are other variables like IE proxy settings that may affect your connectivity again.http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc281253.aspxI would recommend configuring the data source for your reporting services point withcredentials stored securely on the report server. Anyway if that wouldnt work for you let me know if the above link helps you out; else we can troubleshoot it one step at a time. Thanks,Bhaskar

Thanks for the replies. I was able to get the delegation to work when I trusted the reporting services server for delegation to any service. I was hoping for constrained delegation but after some time of trying to narrow down what needed to be allowed I gave up.I found a nice article (4 part series) by Ken Schaefer to walk me through basic delegation.http://www.adopenstatic.com/cs/blogs/ken/archive/2006/10/19/512.aspxBut that was on my test server... After some thought and discussion with my team I'll look into storing the creds on the report server.Again, thanks for the replies. I'll work on it some more and hopefully have an update soon. Thanks!JoeThanks! Joe

Final update... Stored the credentials securely on the server and it works great. Thanks for all the help! Thanks! Joe

I am getting the same error when I accessing the reports some other box, but works fine on it's own box (SSRS 2008). The 'GiftCardDataSource' is asking for Windows Authentications and also in web.config of reportingservice is also windows. An error has occurred during report processing. (rsProcessingAborted) Cannot create a connection to data source 'GiftCardDataSource'. (rsErrorOpeningConnection) For more information about this error navigate to the report server on the local server machine, or enable remote errors In Logs : e ERROR: Reporting Services error Microsoft.ReportingServices.Diagnostics.Utilities.RSException: An error has occurred during report processing. ---> Microsoft.ReportingServices.ReportProcessing.ProcessingAbortedException: An error has occurred during report processing. ---> Microsoft.ReportingServices.ReportProcessing.ReportProcessingException: Cannot create a connection to data source 'GiftCardDataSource'. ---> System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: Login failed for user 'NT AUTHORITY\ANONYMOUS LOGON'. Please help.

How are you passing credentials? If you're not storing them on the server, you'll have to setup delegation. See Ken Schaefers article I link to above. Thanks! Joe

I have my reportserver on server A and my datasource's database on server B and I want to access the report server from Server C. All of them are windows authentication. So in my resportserver's web-config -- <authentication mode="Windows"/> <identity impersonate="false"/> The next thing I do is create a user on my datasource's DB for ServerA with windows authentication. But still I am getting the same error.
