Installing FIM hotfixes versus official updates (Update 2 or R2?)
I'm looking for some collected wisdom regarding applying hotfixes versus waiting for official updates to be released for FIM 2010. It seems to be a frequent occurrence in this forum that users with problems are advised to apply the latest hotfix and that the latest version available from Windows Updates are "too old". See this post for an example. The advice seems to come from the more experienced and knowledgeable people participating in the forum. Each hotfix KB article strongly advises waiting for official updates and only applying the hotfix if the problems fixed apply to your situation, but it seems that with FIM 2010 there are so many different things fixed (often small, but not always) it is hard NOT to be someone affected by the problem resolved by the hotfix. Are more customers rolling the hotfixes into production, or sticking with the official updates? Does anyone know when the next official update to FIM 2010 might be coming? Is there going to be a FIM 2010 Update 2, or is that what FIM 2010 R2 is meant to be?

Chris, The way I look at it is to review both what's fixed and what new issues are known to exist in a hotfix. My experience so far has been that there are more benefits than issues with the 3573.2 release and the fixes apply to every implementation I've done, so that's the one I'm using. Of course, evey fix after update 1 requires you to install Update 1, so my sequence is RTM Sync, Service, Language Pack Update1 Sync, Service, Language Pack 3573.2 Sync, Service, Language Pack The longest part is the language packs (look for about 12k requests each time you add or update the LP's if you use all the default languages)Frank C.
